Rangers battling Belgian club to sign Copa America talent who ‘wants’ move - report

Rangers are changing tact in the transfer market under the direction of Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen.

For too long the club’s supporters have heard a lot of hot air about player trading whilst the Ibrox side have held on to players beyond their prime who have not delivered enough.

Big changes are sweeping through the club with the focus now on young, hungry talents from across the globe who could fetch Rangers a pretty penny in the future.

The problem? It’s that these kind of players are in demand everywhere.

Now, one such target who is currently at the Copa America is also on the shortlist of a familiar Belgian side who are set to go head-to-head with Rangers for his signature.

Rangers face Galdames competition

Rangers fans will remember links to Thomas Galdames appearing earlier in the transfer window.

The Chilean defender, 25, is currently plying his trade with Godoy Cruz in Argentina with the links appearing in the aftermath of a deal for Jose Cordoba collapsing.

Naturally a left-back, the versatile defender can also play at centre-back and it’s an area of the park Rangers have already bolstered this summer.

Wing-back Jefte joins from Brazilian club Fluminense whilst left-sided centre-back Clinton Nsiala has joined from AC Milan.

But with the sounds around Galdames going quiet in recent weeks, for the first time since the Copa America started there’s been some murmurs around the player’s future.

The defender is at the tournament with Chile and according to leading Chilean football site FUT Chile, Thomas Galdames is a target for Belgian club Royal Antwerp.

With Rangers also mentioned, the claims have made their way into the Belgian press with Voetbal Niuews and the two clubs appear in a straight shoot-out to sign the defender.

Throw in Chilean journalist Felipe Ogrodnik claiming that Royal Antwerp are interested on X and suddenly Rangers face serious competition for the defender.

Rangers target wants move ‘now’

The links to Thomas Galdames come with the as of yet uncapped defender at the Copa America with Chile.

The defender is still waiting on his first minutes in the red of Chile, watching on from the bench in the nation’s 0-0 opening group game draw with Peru.

Despite his attendance at the tournament in the United States, Galdames has previously insisted that he will be moving on from Godoy Cruz this summer.

“I don’t know anything, I have a contract in Godoy Cruz until December and mine and their idea is that they sell me now,” Galdames told local media earlier in June.

“My representative is working on that, they are not issues that concern me and I focus only on the games.

“I know that, going to Europe in a competitive league, before here in South America I will continue to grow.”

The defender played a blinder in what could prove his final game for Godoy Cruz earlier in the month.
