Report: 'Brilliant' player wanted by Leeds has a release clause and is now 'sure' to leave this summer

Leeds United have been handed a boost in their pursuit of a reported transfer target with the news he has a release clause in his deal.

It will certainly be interesting to see if Leeds make any moves in the market this week with the end of the football financial year on Sunday.

Any deals that come after June 30 will not be shown on the accounts released next year, which should certainly make for an intriguing few days.

A big sale before that date would certainly stand Leeds in good stead when it comes to PSR, though it would appear the sponsorship deal agreed with Red Bull has somewhat eased the immediate concerns.

With that in mind, Leeds may really start to get their window into gear once we get into July, which is also when both of the major international tournaments come to an end.

Leeds handed boost in pursuit of Liam Millar

Leeds have only four representatives at both the EUROs and Copa America this summer, one of which is already out in Liam Cooper, with Scotland seeing their time in Germany come to an end on Sunday.

Max Wober and Rasmus Kristensen are currently away with Austria and Denmark respectively, while Brenden Aaronson is in the USA squad.

And one of their reported targets is actually playing for one of Aaronson’s biggest rivals on the international stage in Canada, under former Whites boss Jesse Marsch.

It was reported over the weekend that Leeds are one of several Championship sides running the rule over Basel winger Liam Millar at the Copa America, who played 85 minutes in Canada’s opener against Argentina.

According to the Athletic, Leeds have received a potential boost in their pursuit of former Preston North End loanee Millar as he has a release clause in his deal that makes a departure an almost ‘sure’ thing.

It is unclear at this stage how much that is worth, but he does only have 12 months left remaining on his contract and so he will need to leave this summer for Basel to avoid losing him on a free.

What Archie Gray said about Millar after last season

It would be fair to say Archie Gray had one of his most difficult matches up against Millar when Leeds made the trip to Deepdale on Boxing Day.

Millar registered a goal and an assist that day and regularly got the better of the Leeds teenager, who was full of praise for him after the return meeting a month later.

He said: “With Jack Clarke and Liam Millar, you have to do different thing. It’s about realising who you’re playing against, realising strengths, realising what you need to do for his weaknesses and where to force them.

“You learn the most from difficult games. You’ve got brilliant wingers in this league. Sometimes they’re going to get the better of you in situations, you learn the most from them.”
