Leeds must bid if 'special' Arsenal player can go on loan as Championship rival eyes ambitious move - opinion

In one of the more surprising rumours of the summer, one of Leeds United’s Championship rivals next season are eyeing an ambitious loan move for an Arsenal player.

Leeds fans will feel optimistic about their chances of securing promotion at the second time of asking, particularly given the quality of the sides which got across the line last season.

But there are large question marks over whether the top end of the league will be stronger next year while everyone waits to see how the likes of Luton Town, Burnley and Sheffield United get through the transfer window.

Judging by one report this month, Luton, in particular, have big plans as they look to replace Ross Barkley.

Leeds must act if Emile Smith Rowe really can join Championship side on loan this summer

It was reported by Football Transfers that the Hatters are interested in a loan move for Emile Smith Rowe, with the Arsenal attacking midfielder struggling for minutes over the last two years.

In truth, it is incredibly hard to see Smith Rowe ending up in the Championship on loan next season. Despite his problems at the Emirates, he is someone who last dropped down to the second tier the year Leeds were promoted under Marcelo Bielsa. And he went on to score 10 Premier League goals in the 2021/22 campaign.

But if Luton are indeed planning a move and feel that they have a chance of striking a deal, then Leeds absolutely should put themselves in the mix too.

Arsenal player has already sent Whites up once before

Smith Rowe is a ‘special‘ talent who definitely played his part in lifting Arsenal out of mid-table mediocrity. He had his struggles with injuries, and that saw him drop down the pecking order.

The likes of Fulham and Brighton are also interested in Smith Rowe, so this is definitely a player with the quality to thrive at the very highest level. He would definitely be a game-changer in the Championship if a move did somehow become possible.

Smith Rowe has already secured his place in Leeds folklore by scoring the goal which confirmed the Whites’ promotion four years ago.

If there really is any chance of a Championship loan move this summer, Leeds would be foolish to not make a move and give him the opportunity to potentially score another promotion-clinching goal for the club.
