'I struggled': Levi Colwill shares what Mauricio Pochettino did last season that he found 'really tough'

Levi Colwill had quite a mixed season with Chelsea.

There were ups, with Levi Colwill making his Chelsea debut during the 2023/24 campaign.

The central defender also got to captain the side on one occasion and his early-season form even saw him win his first England cap.

However, there were also some downs, including a problematic toe injury.

It resulted in Colwill missing several games and once the 21-year-old returned from it, he could not find his way back into the starting XI.

What Levi Colwill has struggled with at Chelsea

While Colwill is naturally a centre-back, former manager Mauricio Pochettino often used him as a left-back.

The Englishman has now admitted that he struggled to adapt to the position.

Speaking to Chelsea’s official website about it, Colwill said: “I’ve had ups and downs. I struggled as I played in a different position for half the season [at left-back].

“That was really tough, but I learned so much from it.”

Should Levi Colwill have gone to Euro 2024?

In the end, Colwill’s injury and failure to win his place back in the Chelsea team probably cost him a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

Still, you cannot help but feel that Southgate should have taken him.

The fact that he can play at left-back could have come in handy, especially with Luke Shaw not being fit.

Colwill is obviously not a bad central defender either.

As per FBref, the England international has ranked in the 94th percentile for tackles and the 85th for progressive carries among centre-halves over the last year.

Ultimately, Colwill is a modern-day centre-back who can defend but also play with the ball. He could have been a great asset to Southgate in Germany because of that and his versatility.

From Chelsea’s point of view, at least Colwill, alongside Reece James and Ben Chilwell, can get some rest and feature in all of the Blues’ pre-season.
