'Been great': Alan Shearer says 'impressive' Man City target has actually been the best player at Euro 2024

Alan Shearer has made a huge claim about one reported Manchester City target.

It was claimed last Monday that City will only make a major summer signing if they sell one of their players but even so, they continue to be linked with big names in the transfer market.

It seems like transfer business for all clubs will accelerate only after Euro 2024 draws to a close. Manchester City’s potential outgoings will perhaps also be decided once the tournament comes to an end.

Alan Shearer makes big claim about Man City target Jamal Musiala

Pep Guardiola and Co. will be taking a close look at the standout performers at the European Championship.

City tend not to sign players solely due to the fact that they have shone at an international tournament. But if a player does, it is certainly impressive due to the pressure of representing one’s country and the difficulty of replicating one’s club form at such a prestigious competition.

Jamal Musiala is one player who has been linked with Manchester City — with a report stating this month that while they showed their interest in him, a transfer seems “too difficult to pull off.”

Now, Alan Shearer has claimed that City-linked Musiala, who has been making waves for Germany at Euro 2024 has been the tournament’s best player.

Shearer said on The Rest Is Football podcast: “[Jamal] Musiala was great, wasn’t he?”

“Been great. Certainly first two games anyway. Yeah, I would think him, Player of the Tournament up to now but what’s he had three games, wasn’t so good in the final game but first two games, he was impressive.”

Julian Nagelsmann provides Jamal Musiala blueprint to Man City

It is difficult to look past too many other players over Musiala as Euro 2024’s best player, as Shearer stated.

If Manchester City do end up signing Musiala, Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann has provided the tactical blueprint on how they should utilise him.

Considering Pep Guardiola does not often play Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden as a pair of attacking midfielders, he might refrain from doing the same in the 21-year-old’s case.

However, much like how Guardiola utilised Foden as an inside forward last season with Gvardiol holding the width as an advanced left-back, Nagelsmann has also deployed Musiala in a similar position — with Maximilian Mittelstadt tasked to stay high and wide.

If Kyle Walker and Josko Gvardiol were to be utilised as touchline-hugging full-backs, City could fit Musiala, Foden and Kevin De Bruyne in the same team — creating chances for Erling Haaland from central areas.

Whether Manchester City will be able to sign Musiala is a different story but as Shearer stated, he has been terrific at the European Championship so far.
