Ronaldo began the game wearing green boots…

Cristiano Ronaldo helped Bruno Fernandes out with the assist, which Portugal boss Roberto Martinez labelled as an example to footballers and youngsters around the world.

But he also had a helping hand from Fernandes, who appeared to lend him a pair of his boots at half-time.

The boots worn by Cristiano Ronaldo in the second half were the same as worn by his former Manchester United teammate Fernandes.

And according to Portuguese outlet Noticias Ao Minuto, the boots were borrowed, as they featured the inscription ‘Matilde’, the name of Fernandes’ daughter.

Fernandes praised Ronaldo

The reason for Fernandes lending Ronaldo his boots remains unclear, but A Bola note how the striker returned the favour by setting him up for his goal.

Fernandes’ boots are known for creating goals for teammates, the Manchester United captain has led the team for assists every single season since signing for the club from Sporting in 2020.

Speaking after the goal, Fernandes explained: “Obviously everyone likes to score, but it’s not more important, that showed in my goal, Cris is a person who is our best scorer, and, in a moment of opportunity to score, he gives the ball wide. It shows what it means to us, to win games and not to score goals.”

It will be interesting to see if Ronaldo decides Fernandes’ boots are good luck for the tournament, or if he reverts to his previous green pair in Portugal’s final group game with Georgia.
