OnePlus suggests its next tablet will be the most powerful Android slate ever

OnePlus was the latest company to join the tablet party last year.

Although the OnePlus Pad was quite impressive, its successor was never likely to be far away. A new device, known as the OnePlus Pad Pro, is launching in China, but this may be rebranded as the Pad 2.

If true, OnePlus’ claims of it being “the most powerful Android tablet” raises questions about its potential specs and pricing.

Find out everything we currently know about it below.

When will the OnePlus Pad 2 be released?

OnePlus has teased the Pad Pro on Weibo, indicating a forthcoming release in China on 27 June. This marks the first launch of a tablet in this category by OnePlus in the region.

As a reminder, the OnePlus Pad was announced on 7 February 2023 and later released globally on 8 May 2023. Given its availability in the US, the new model might debut outside China as the OnePlus Pad 2 to avoid confusion.

How much will the OnePlus Pad 2 cost?

While official pricing details are not yet available, the competitive pricing of the OnePlus Pad suggests a similar approach for the new model.

For the price of $499/£449, the current version offers impressive specs, making it likely that the Pad Pro will follow suit with a value-oriented price.

However, the price might also get an increase, especially if OnePlus opts for the latest and greatest chipset.

What specs and features will the OnePlus Pad 2 have?

Assuming the OnePlus Pad Pro is rebranded in the West as the Pad 2, we’ll know a lot more about it soon. In the meantime, rumours paint a convincing picture of what to expect.

Design & display

A recent leak by Digital Chat Station reveals real-life images of the purported OnePlus Pad Pro. The images suggest that the design of the new tablet is very similar to the original OnePlus Pad.

However, it seems that the display will remain an LCD panel. Although the original OnePlus Pad’s 11.61-inch LCD was notable for its price, featuring Dolby Vision support and a 144Hz refresh rate, an OLED display would be more desirable for superior multimedia performance.

Performance

The OnePlus Pad is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 9000 paired with 8/12GB RAM and 128- or 256GB of storage.

According to the recent teaser image shared by OnePlus on Weibo, the Pad Pro will be the most powerful Android tablet, hinting at the inclusion of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. This would agree with a Geekbench 6 listing named ‘OnePlus OPD2404, believed to be the OnePlus Pad Pro.

The listing claims that the tablet will use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The tested unit, running Android 14 with 8GB of RAM, scored 2,103 in single-core and 6,297 in multi-core tests, though performance may improve in the retail version.

What’s more, back in April, leaker Max Jambor also claimed that the OnePlus Pad Pro will feature the 8 Gen 3 chipset.

However, the Dimensity 9300+ is also a likely contender, being considered the most powerful Android chipset currently. OnePlus might opt for this to balance performance and cost, especially as the original Pad also used a MediaTek chipset (Dimensity 9000).

We don’t know anything about its battery and cameras, so we assume they will stay the same for now. As a reminder, the OnePlus Pad sports a 9510mAh battery and two cameras: a 13Mp rear shooter and an 8Mp selfie camera.
