'Prince William's selfie with Taylor Swift is a photo Meghan Markle never wanted to see' - Opinion

Prince William was Shaking It Off over the weekend while he celebrated his birthday at a Taylor Swift concert with two of his children. While fans in the audience loved seeing the Prince pull out all of his dad moves, there is likely one person who isn’t over the moon with the footage – Meghan Markle.

On the surface, it may just appear as an innocent selfie between Prince William and the pop sensation. It seemed like a delightful picture, with Prince George and Princess Charlotte beaming from ear to ear next to the mega superstar, even Travis Kelce jumped in for the snap. But the Taylor Swift selfie actually speaks louder than words, and is another punch to the gut for Meghan Markle.

The Duchess of Sussex has been to the Eras Tour herself, attending her LA SoFi Stadium concert in August last year, so the 42-year-old won’t be reeling over tickets. Instead, it’s about what it represents and the ‘snub’ she had to recover from when she was trying to carve out a new career after leaving The Firm.

To the naked eye, it looks like a selfie with Taylor Swift and Prince William, but in reality, it’s another blow to the Duchess she has learned All Too Well.

While most of the reaction from fans were celebrating the heir to the British throne not being afraid to embrace his 1989 era, some did joke about his dad dancing.

But, as videos circulated far and wide, stretching beyond the walls of Wembley Stadium, Whoopi Goldberg defended the royal.

On Monday’s episode of The View, the 68-year-old was on his side against the criticism.

She said: “Some fans were roasting his moves, but my goodness, it’s the guy’s birthday, lighten up! It’s the guy’s birthday, let him do what he does!”

There are no clips of Meghan at her Eras Tour night, but a source told Page Six she ‘jumped out of her chair to sing to You Belong With Me’.

Prince Harry was nowhere to be seen, as he was on a trip to Japan for the ISPS Sports Values Summit-Special Edition in Tokyo at the time. But Meg had her pal Lucy Fraser at her side, so it was a well-deserved girls’ night out.

The striking difference between each attendance? There’s no selfie with Meghan.

Meghan sent Taylor a handwritten letter

What makes matters worse, is Meghan is said to have penned a personal letter to Taylor, asking her to make an appearance on her Archetypes podcast when it was on Spotify.

However, reports say she was rejected, not by the celebrity herself, but through her representative – ouch.

Taylor, an avid feminist who has always spoken her mind on matters that mean the most to her, seems like a prime candidate for Meg’s podcast, so what was that about?

Before you suggest her busy schedule, it was way before the record-breaking tour kicked off, so an afternoon with the Duchess wouldn’t have caused any major delays.

You’d think two influential women who like to speak their mind would have hit it off, but Meghan’s dwindling star power wasn’t enough.

Could it be Meghan Markle’s reputation and the public perception of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex that turned Taylor off?

The mom-of-two did get some big names on her show, including Mindy Kaling and Serena Williams, who have been longtime friends with the Duchess anyway.

She even bagged Mariah Carey, who told her some home truths when she proclaimed to Meghan ‘You give us diva moments sometimes’. It didn’t exactly go down well, as Meg then admits she started to ‘sweat a little bit’ and claimed ‘she didn’t actually see’ her for who she is. Harry even admitted he thought Meghan was a diva at the beginning of the relationship, so it couldn’t be that much of a shock.

Take the feedback.

It’s not secret Meghan has had a tough time in Hollywood. The former TV star, who admitted herself, she started a new chapter in her life when she married Prince Harry, appears to be undergoing an identity crisis after leaving the royals.

First there was the Spotify podcast, which ended in tears, and an exec at the music giant calling both Meg and Prince Harry “f***ing grifters”. Although the company said it was a mutual decision to part ways, it sounds as if there were some awkward meetings throughout to get to that point.

The 42-year-old published a children’s book which failed to stay on a bestseller’s list, The Bench, and she hasn’t gone back to writing since. Then there was a spell on The Ellen DeGeneres show where she drank from a baby bottle in a prank, but we don’t need to relive that more than we have to.

The royal has now embarked on a new lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard, where she’ll sell homemade goods, dinnerware and everything else in between. But she can’t seem to stay in one spot, although, her leaving The Firm less than two years after marrying Harry was likely a tell-tale sign.

Whereas the royals have managed to stay on their same course, albeit to some this isn’t a plus, it’s structure.

There’s been fears she’s no longer friends with Oprah Winfrey after their tell-all interview, as well as whispers she gives Hollywood the ‘ick’. Considering the Duke and Duchess of Sussex left the palace to make their own way in the world, but can’t seem to work out what that is, is telling. Maybe it was a mistake to leave in the first place?

The rest of the family rubbing shoulders with the biggest stars on the planet is likely to be a pinch for the Sussexes though, as they’re exceeding at what they’ve tried to do, without as much effort.

Make a jar of jam and let it all blow over, Meg.
