Pirates of the Caribbean actor 'loved by all' dies after shark attack - ‘A tragic loss'

Surfer and actor best known from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Tamayo Perry, has tragically died following a shark attack.

Since the 2003 blockbuster sensation The Pirates of the Caribbean hit theaters in 2003, the world has embraced four sequels, demanding more and more swashbuckling rogues to make up the supporting cast alongside Johnny Depp. Coming aboard for the fourth installment in 2011, subtitled On Stranger Tides, was Tamayo Perry. He had already starred in movies such as Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle and TV shows like Hawaii Five-O. Although coming into the film series past its halfway point, he was entirely convincing as one of the core pirates. But sadly, it’s been announced that he has passed away.

Honolulu’s emergency services in Hawaii recently addressed that Tamayo was attacked while surfing off Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu’s North Shore. Showing signs of “more than one shark bite,” he tragically died at 49.

After being pulled to shore by lifeguards who located him by jet ski, paramedics confirmed his death on the afternoon of Sunday, June 23, 2024.

In the wake of the incident, Ocean Safety personnel have warned of sharks swimming in the area, urging caution.

As well as being an actor, Tamayo was an immensely passionate surfer and had been immersed in the culture from his early teens, beginning his journey as a local lifeguard before stepping up as a surfing coach.

Gradually becoming proficient on the waves, his ability to surf the notorious Pipeline wave at Ehukai beach helped make him something of a local legend, and he even won a trophy after smashing the Pipeline Master Trials in 1999.

Star cherished as a man ‘loved by all’ in tributes

Tributes are currently being written, mourning the passing of a man who has been a pillar of his community for many years.

The World Surf League praised him as “a big part of the North Shore community,” and acting chief of the Honolulu Ocean Safety group, Kurt Lager, said he was “a lifeguard loved by all.”

He was a dear friend to Kurt, who added: “He’s well known on the North Shore. He’s a professional surfer known worldwide. Tamayo’s personality was infectious, and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more.”

The mayor of Honolulu, Rick Blangiardi, noted his passing as “a tragic loss”, both personal and for the city. “Tamayo was a legendary waterman and highly respected.”

Those who didn’t know him personally are still compelled to share their condolences. “As a fellow surfer, I’m very saddened and want to show respect to him and his family,” a mourner tweeted.

May he rest in peace and his family find comfort during this difficult time.
