Report: Texas A&M will have hefty war chest to hire new baseball coach

Texas A&M fans are reeling after the decision of coach Jim Schlossnagle to depart for the Texas job, but there’s a good reason for Aggies fans to remain optimistic in the face of the unexpected chaos.

D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers reports that the Aggies will have a full war chest to work with in hiring a new coach.

“I spoke to sources throughout last week with knowledge that Schlossnagle would consider going to Texas,” Rogers wrote on Twitter. “I was told if that happened, @AggieBaseball would pay whatever was needed to land an elite coach. A&M, given new ballpark coming/resources will be attractive. Buckle up.”

With the rest of the coaching carousel mostly settled at this point, A&M can take aim at just about anybody out there.

Coming off a second trip to the College World Series in the last three years, it should be readily apparent to any prospective hire just how good a job the Texas A&M gig can be.

Still, there will be at least some sting from Schlossnagle’s departure.

If not for the action itself, certainly for the lead-in to it. Schlossnagle stated in really no uncertain terms following a loss to Tennessee in the championship game on Monday night that he planned to be with the Aggies for a long time.

“I think it’s pretty selfish of you to ask me that question, to be honest with you,” Schlossnagle had said following the game on Monday night. “I left my family to be the coach at Texas A&M. I took the job at Texas A&M to never take another job again, and that hasn’t changed in my mind.

“That’s unfair to talk about something like that. That would be like you asking (Braden) Montgomery if he’s going to sign in the draft. But I understand you gotta ask the question, but I gave up a big part of my life to come take this job and I’ve poured every ounce of my soul in this job and I’ve given this job every single ounce I can possibly give it. Write that.”

Well, the stories that are being written on Tuesday evening are far different than the picture Schlossnagle attempted to paint.

For Texas A&M, though, life will go on, no matter how hard a pill to swallow Schlossnagle’s departure is. But if Rogers’ reporting is accurate, the Aggies should be able to land a quality new coach.
