What Leeds defender Max Wober did vs Netherlands that left Austrian media very impressed

Leeds United will have to wait a little longer for a decision on Max Wober’s future after Austria’s 3-2 win over Netherlands.

In a group that also consisted of France and Poland, Wober‘s side have somehow managed to end their group stage campaign as winners after a very impressive showing on Tuesday evening.

After a nightmare individual start to the tournament for Wober in the 1-0 defeat to France, Austria have managed to recover with back-to-back wins over Poland and Netherlands to seal their passage to the next round.

Wober revealed last week that a decision on his future at Leeds will not be made until his time at the EUROs is over.

And it certainly seems he could be there for a while yet with Austria one of the most impressive sides in the tournament so far, and also on the other side of the draw to Spain, Germany, Portugal and France.

Austrian media deliver verdict on Wober display

As mentioned, Wober did not enjoy a great outing in his previous start in the EUROs when his ‘very poor’ own goal gifted France a 1-0 win.

He was then dropped to the bench and an unused sub in the 3-1 victory over Poland, but was brought back into the starting XI at centre-back against Netherlands.

Wober was tasked with marking some pretty impressive names at the front end of the pitch, including Memphis Depay, Xavi Simons and Cody Gakpo.

And while Austria did concede twice, they were certainly more than worth their victory and place at the top of Group B.

Austrian outlet Salzburger Nachrichten provided their verdict on Wober’s performance in a post-match player ratings piece and were left very impressed with the character he showed to bounce back from his struggles against France.

They wrote: “Maximilian Wöber. Has put away the bitter opening game against France including his own goal. A very good performance with good passports and strong rescue acts. Very strong.”

Graeme Bailey says Daniel Farke could welcome back Wober

As Wober has said himself, Leeds are set to make a decision on his future once he is back from the EUROs.

After the decision to reintegrate Brenden Aaronson, nothing can be ruled out with either his or Rasmus Kristensen’s future, and speaking to LeedsUnited.News, Graeme Bailey says Daniel Farke is definitely considering bringing one or both back.

He said: “It is something Farke is considering. I think a lot of it will come down to the players as well. There is a fair chance you could see one or both [staying], depending on how Leeds’ other business goes.

“As I said before, I’d heard Aaronson could come back, that’s happening. Wober, there is interest elsewhere so we’ll have to see how that pans out, decent chance he might come back as well.

“Leeds are in a good position if they can add Kristensen and Wober. I wouldn’t rule it out by any stretch of the imagination.”
