Report: West Ham now hopeful of clinching truly 'fantastic' defensive signing this week

West Ham United have been busy on the transfer front and this is likely to continue over the coming weeks.

The Hammers already have one new signing on board, bringing Luis Guilherme to the London Stadium from Brazilian club Palmeiras.

West Ham recently appointed Julen Lopetegui as their new manager, and the Premier League club will be eager to give him the necessary tools to hit the ground running.

The east Londoners are likely to bolster their defensive ranks this summer after a difficult 2023/24 season in which they failed to qualify for Europe.

West Ham conceded 74 goals in the Premier League last campaign, more than any other team in the top half of the table.

Now, a report has claimed that the Hammers are hopeful of securing a deal for an ‘outstanding’ defender by the end of the week.

West Ham hopeful of clinching Max Kilman deal

West Ham have been heavily linked with Wolverhampton Wanderers captain Max Kilman in recent weeks.

As well as the Hammers, the likes of Manchester United are also said to be interested in the Wolves ace.

Now, according to The Guardian, West Ham are expected to bid again for Kilman after Wolves rejected a bid of £30million plus add-ons last week.

The Hammers ‘hope they will be able to clinch a deal for him this week’, the report added.

West Ham will then look to turn their attention to other positions, with the likes of Jonathan David and Ismael Kone said to be in their sights.

The Hammers have been linked with a host of other players too, including the likes of Juventus attacker Matias Soule.

Who is West Ham target Max Kilman?

Max Kilman has been a revelation for Wolves since being snapped up from Maidenhead United back in 2018. He has over 150 club appearances to his name.

He would be a superb signing for West Ham. He’s very talented, boasts plenty of Premier League experience, and is very much in his prime as a centre-back.

The 27-year-old is not only superb with the ball at his feet, but he has previously been deemed one of the best in the English top flight in terms of one-on-one defending.

Andy Thompson said on Wolves Weekly Matchday Live Extra following their loss to Arsenal in April: “He’s probably one of the best in the Premier League one-vs-one defending.

“He just seems to get better every time we see him. He’s comfortable on the ball. he heads it, he’ll pass it, he challenges for things, he’s strong, he’s a good player and he’s getting better.”

Meanwhile, Conor Coady told the Wolves website in 2020: “Max has been with us for years, he trains with us every single day, he knows the role inside out, he’s a fantastic lad and a brilliant professional as well.

“He’s brilliant to have around and is a brilliant professional – he listens to the manager, he learns off the lads who’ve been playing there the last couple of years and I think you could see that today.”
