Confusion reigns as tabloid backtrack over serious Rangers claims surrounding key player

The world of Rangers media is an ever changing and fluid place.

It’s not always easy to keep on top of what is a rolling news cycle not only in the world of the Ibrox club but also in the 24/7 news wheel in general.

Media outlets do their best to keep fans informed but there are moments where individuals or publications are forced to backtrack on their initial information.

And amid claims surrounding Rangers captain James Tavernier – the subject of immense scrutiny this summer – one leading Scottish tabloid has been forced to pivot.

Tavernier not stripped of Rangers captaincy

The Daily Record broke the story which claimed that under-pressure Rangers skipper James Tavernier was set to be stripped of the Ibrox captaincy.

Handed the honour by Steven Gerrard in 2018, fans have heaped the pressure on the right-back after calamitous showings against Old Firm rivals Celtic at a crucial moment of the season.

It has been claimed that Philippe Clement is set to hand the armband to Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland instead.

The news comes after months of speculation surrounding James Tavernier, who we exclusively revealed is a genuine target for clubs in Saudi Arabia.

Throw in links to Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq and suddenly some smaller fan media outlets, with a few ticks in the green column this summer, claimed an exit is imminent.

But as James Tavernier rocked up to the first day of Rangers pre-season training, it had us all scratching out heads.

And as if to shovel on the confusion even further, the original Daily Record article was not so much updated but completely transformed little over an hour later.

Can Rangers skipper survive summer?

Suggesting that there’s been a little nudge from sources around Rangers, the Daily Record updated the story to claim that James Tavernier isn’t being stripped of the captaincy at all.

In fact, the long-serving Rangers captain will only lose the armband if he does indeed leave the club.

Whilst perhaps the suggestion Jack Butland will be the new captain is worthy of a headline, James Tavernier losing the captaincy because he leaves the club isn’t really a story at all.

It’s all very confusing and with fans and other media publications scrambling to keep up it’s left us all scratching our heads.

It’s probably left James Tavernier doing the same.

After nine years at Rangers, Tav has survived plenty of squad overhauls and plenty of change in the past so we wouldn’t write him off just yet.

But is his time at Rangers finally coming to an end?
