Rangers will have to dig deep to sign player of the year midfielder with transfer fee hint

Rangers have a lot of players to bring in as well as several to sell with Nils Koppen and Philippe Clement looking to rebuild the squad.

One player who has been linked is Kenny McLean, the Scotland international and die hard Blue Nose who would love nothing better than turning out at Ibrox in the famous light blue strip.

With two years left of his Norwich City contract, the captain and player of the year will command a fee and Canaries reporter Connor Southwell has revealed just how much in the PinkUn.

Kenny McLean won’t come cheap if Rangers want to seal deal

The manager has spoken about needing to add experience to the four young guns who have arrived and McLean could be the ideal replacement for the likes of Ryan Jack and John Lundstram:

“It’s going to be a big one because of all the out of contracts and maybe others also. So it’s going to be quite a rebuild. You want to keep foundations from this season also, you don’t want to start from zero again. So we need to find a balance in that and doing smart things for now but also for the future of club.

“To bring profiles in like Mohamed Diomande is proving now week after week who can also be assets for the future. But we need to also get experience in if experience is leaving the building. So we need to find a good balance.”

According to Southwell, “any offer would need to be substantial to tempt Norwich into a sale” despite the obvious emotional pull for the player wanting to return to Glasgow where he spent time at Auchenhowie as a teenager.

McLean fee that Rangers pay has to be justifiable

The question is, what is Norwich’s definition of “substantial”?

Rangers should never be paying millions for players who are in their 30s, except for maybe a goalkeeper.

McLean has plenty of experience in the Premier League and Championship but even comparisons to Rodri and Declan Rice make it hard to justify paying decent money.

The former St Mirren and Aberdeen midfielder would add much needed intelligence and experience to the engine room and has spent most of his recent time spent in front of the back four.

Not every signing this summer is going to be an exciting one, some of them will just be ones that make sense.

On paper, Kenny McLean makes a lot of sense given his profile and consistency throughout his career, but only if the price is right.
