Report: Chelsea's sporting directors have been following £20m player for a long time

Chelsea’s co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart have one player firmly on their radar.

It has been a busy start to the transfer window for Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, who spearhead Chelsea‘s recruitment.

While it is still only June, the Blues have already brought in Tosin Adarabioyo from Fulham on a free transfer and have also agreed a deal with Palmeiras to sign Estevao Willian.

However, Winstanley and Stewart’s work is unlikely to end there.

Chelsea are in need of another striker for their first team after Nicolas Jackson finished last season as the only recognised centre-forward in the squad.

One striker Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart could end up bringing to Chelsea

Chelsea came sixth in the 2023/24 Premier League campaign, missing out on Champions League qualification as a result.

If they want to finish in the top four next term, then the club probably will need to sign a new striker to support Jackson.

According to The Guardian, that man could be Lille’s Jonathan David.

The outlet claims that Winstanley and Stewart have been following David for a long time and that the 24-year-old could cost as little as £20m this summer.

He was in great form for Lille last season, scoring 26 goals in 47 appearances.

Chelsea face competition for Jonathan David

If Winstanley and Stewart want to bring David to Stamford Bridge, then they may have to act quickly.

The Guardian’s report claims that Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United are also interested in the Canada international.

It is not a shock to see David attracting so much attention right now.

He has a good goal record in France and is going to come cheap as his contract continues to run down. As things stand, he will be a free agent in 2025.

All in all, David ticks quite a lot of boxes. In their search for a new centre-forward, it makes sense for Chelsea to look at him.
