Since being taken over by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, a lot of Chelsea’s signings have come under scrutiny.
Chelsea have spent big on the likes of Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Mykhailo Mudryk, three of the most expensive signings in the club’s history, and they have all come in for criticism at times.
Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy, for example, feels that Mudryk plays with fear at Stamford Bridge.
Finishing sixth and 12th place in their two seasons under Boehly and Clearlake, you certainly can question Chelsea’s recent business. However, the Blues could be about to make a really smart signing.
Chelsea’s transfer business under Todd Boehly
To be fair to the current Chelsea ownership, they have made some signings who have not cost too much money and have gone on to make a real impact in west London.
Cole Palmer is obviously the standout example. Last season, the attacker scored 25 goals and provided 15 assists in 45 appearances for Chelsea after his £45m move from Manchester City.
Malo Gusto also did a good job under former manager Mauricio Pochettino as he stood in for captain Reece James.
In total, the 21-year-old made 37 appearances and produced nine assists, which is pretty good for a full-back. He cost Chelsea just £30.7m.
Jonathan David could be another smart signing for Chelsea
Palmer and Gusto have proven to be bargains for Chelsea, and Lille’s Jonathan David has the potential to be another one for the club.
According to The Athletic, Chelsea have held discussions with David’s representatives about a transfer to Stamford Bridge this summer.
HITC recently claimed that the striker could cost just £30m.
Last season, David scored 26 goals in 47 appearances, and in the campaign before, 26 in 40.
The Canada international is still just 24 as well. He has time to get even better.
Ultimately, David could be the perfect alternative to Nicolas Jackson. The former Gent man can take some of the pressure off Jackson without costing Chelsea a fortune.
This would definitely be one of the smarter signings made under Boehly and Clearlake if the club get it done.
