‘Player of the match’: Stuart Pearce claims Man City star was England’s best player vs Slovenia

Manchester City fans have had the chance to see a significant number of their players in action during the 2024 European Championship.

In fact, City have had more players selected to play in the Euros (14) than any other side in the Premier League.

With the group stage of the tournament almost over, the majority of City’s international talents look set to make it through to the knockout stage of the competition.

Tuesday’s round of late group fixtures saw numerous City players in action, one of which has now found himself on the end of some big praise for his latest individual performance.

Stuart Pearce impressed by Phil Foden’s latest England performance

Reflecting on last night’s game between England and Slovenia, Stuart Pearce had this to say on talkSPORT when asked about Phil Foden’s display in the 0-0 draw.

He said: “I thought Phil played well. Well enough to probably select him as the player of the match.”

Foden was a bright spark for England

The 24-year-old, who Kobbie Mainoo said he’s been amazed by in England training, started his third consecutive game at the Euros this summer before being taken off in the 89th minute for Anthony Gordon.

During his time on the pitch, the City star had 97 touches of the ball in total, accurately completing 73 of the 79 passes he attempted, two of which were key passes.

In addition to that, Foden has three shots at goal in total, one of which was on target and was able to successfully complete the two dribbles he went on.

This performance ultimately earned the six-time Premier League champion an overall match rating of 7.6/10 from SofaScore, making him the joint-highest-rated England player on the night alongside Declan Rice.

Taking all of that on board, even though England failed to win the game last night, it’s easy to see why Pearce thinks Foden was the Three Lions’ standout player on this occasion.
