Sunderland given fresh hope of landing Championship star, but he won't be Le Bris' first signing - opinion

A player linked with Sunderland this summer is said to be in ‘transfer limbo’.

Sunderland look set for an active July after hiring a new manager in Regis Le Bris, and getting their first summer signing over the line in Simon Moore.

Le Bris arrives more than four months after the club sacked Michael Beale, and the Frenchman is said to have already had an input in transfer matters at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats’ hierarchy are under pressure to deliver positive results in the summer transfer window after the prolonged and arduous search for a new manager.

Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman is the main man under pressure. He’s had mixed results in the transfer market at Sunderland, last summer especially.

But he now has a golden opportunity to make amends with the Sunderland fans after a tough last few months, with bodies needed across the pitch.

Specifically, Sunderland have been tipped to sign some more experienced players this summer, with the attacking department looking like it needs the most work.

One name linked who now has Championship experience and could greatly bolster the Sunderland attack is Scott Twine.

The latest on Scott Twine future at Burnley amid Sunderland interest

Earlier this summer, Sunderland were linked with Burnley midfielder Scott Twine, who looks set for another summer move.

The 24-year-old earned himself a £4million move to Burnley in the summer of 2022 and scoring 20 goals and assisting 13 during the 2021/22 League One season at MK Dons.

Since, Twine has struggled to settle in the Championship, featuring just 14 times for Burnley in 2022/23 before being shipped out on loan to Hull City and then Bristol City last season.

Twine was training with the Robins earlier this summer but has since reported back to pre-season training with Burnley.

BristolLive say that Twine is now in ‘transfer limbo’ with former MK Dons boss Liam Manning keen on another reunion with Twine at Bristol City.

It was previously reported that Bristol City were confident of signing Twine, with a permanent move suggested.

Could Scott Twine be Regis Le Bris’ first signing at Sunderland

Twine remains an exciting player despite his struggles in the last two seasons, with that one season at MK Dons showcasing what he can do.

He’s a central attacking midfielder who can score and create goals, and he’s something of a set-piece specialist too.

Twine would bring a lot to the table for Sunderland who could yet lose the likes of Jobe Bellingham and Jack Clarke in attack, so additions up top will be crucial this summer.

With Twine reporting back to pre-season training at Burnley, it suggests that the Clarets want to reassess the situation surrounding his future.

That could hand Sunderland a lifeline where Twine is concerned with a move to Bristol City seemingly on hold.

But with Burnley managerless, that could keep Twine at Turf Moor for much of the summer, with the next manager bound to want to take a look at Twine in training.

Sunderland may still have a chance of landing the Englishman this summer. But he may not be one of the first to arrive under Le Bris.
