Alan Shearer shares who he thinks was better - Fernando Torres or Ruud van Nistelrooy

Liverpool have had many world-class strikers over the years, with the long list of top forwards going on and on.

And one name among those at the very top of the list is Fernando Torres, who spent three-and-a-half superb years at Anfield.

Arriving from his boyhood club Atletico Madrid in 2007, the Spaniard became an instant hit on Merseyside.

He went on to bang in 65 Premier League goals, with 81 scored in total during the legendary figure’s time in red.

Torres certainly lost a lot of love from Liverpool with his switch to Chelsea in 2011, but the Anfield faithful still appreciate what he did for their club.

Alan Shearer chooses between Fernando Torres and Ruud van Nistelrooy

He certainly isn’t the only world-class striker to have graced the Premier League, however, with many other clubs having boasted such players once upon a time.

One of which was Ruud van Nistelrooy, who netted a stunning 150 goals during his five-year spell at Manchester United.

Yet another legendary figure in Alan Shearer had been tasked with ranking the duo for BBC Match of the Day, with the Newcastle United icon opting to select Van Nistelrooy over Torres.

He also ranked the former Man United man over fellow ex-Red Devils ace Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but then chose France hero David Trezeguet over Van Nistelrooy.

Liverpool and Manchester United heroes turn to management

Liverpool have endured a lengthy and bitter rivalry with Manchester United, with Shearer’s ranking only going to add more fuel to the fire.

But even the most passionate Reds fans may be forced to admit that Van Nistelrooy was the better goalscorer.

Both players enjoyed stunning careers on the pitch, bringing plenty of joy and excitement to the Premier League and other competitions such as the Champions League.

Torres’s sublime finishing and deadly runs will never be forgotten by Liverpool fans, while Van Nistelrooy’s clinical nature in the box will not be beaten for quite some time.

Both Premier League icons have since taken to management after hanging up their boots, with Torres currently in the dugout at Atletico Madrid B.

Everyone is now backing the Anfield legend to one day manage the first team of his former club, while Van Nistelrooy has been linked with a return to Old Trafford in a coaching capacity alongside Erik ten Hag, having previously managed PSV.
