'An inspiration': Parkinson makes ‘very special’ claim about Wrexham fans as 2024/25 fixtures released

The League One fixtures for the 2024/25 campaign were released on Wednesday morning and ahead of an exciting season, Phil Parkinson has spoken about the supporters.

Wrexham fans all across the globe will have been mapping out their diaries for the season ahead as the 2024/25 League One fixtures were released.

Following promotion from League Two last term, finishing in second behind Stockport County, Phil Parkinson is preparing his side for their biggest challenge yet.

The Reds last played in League One in 2005 and will come up against Tom Brady’s Birmingham City and fellow promotion contenders Huddersfield, Rotherham, Bolton and Peterborough United.

For the supporters who have been on this journey throughout the Hollywood ownership, it’s been an incredibly special period and many will be hoping Wrexham make history in the third tier.

They can do so by winning a third successive promotion and reaching the Championship, but first, the focus is on this summer and Parkinson has had some positive things to say about the Wrexham fans.

Phil Parkinson praises the support of Wrexham fans

Wrexham have grown into a global phenomenon.

Accelerated by the Welcome to Wrexham documentary, the Welsh side are now watched by thousands of American supporters, with Shaun Harvey claiming 5,000 households tuned in to watch Parkinson’s men seal promotion last term.

Despite a spike in their global popularity, they do possess a core fanbase of supporters who have followed the lows and the most recent highs in the clubs’ history.

Most will attend games at the Racecourse Ground and away from home, with Parkinson labelling the travelling army ‘an inspiration’.

Speaking to the club’s official website on fixture release day, Parkinson said: “When we got into the EFL it was terrific for our supporters to go to different grounds, because they had 15 years of going to teams in the same division.

“All of a sudden going to traditional football league clubs like Birmingham and Bolton Wanderers will allow us to take large away followings.

“Some of my memorable moments so far as Wrexham manager are the away followings that we have taken with us.

“The STōK Cae Ras is a very special place to play, but equally when we have been away from home and got that travelling army behind us it has been an inspiration to all the lads and myself.”

Wrexham’s home form will be crucial in League One

With the help of a temporary stand that housed an extra 2,300 fans, Wrexham were able to average around 11,000 at the STōK Cae Ras – a figure only beaten by Bradford City.

The skyrocketing attendance numbers in North Wales have also had a positive impact on the pitch. In their title-winning campaign in the National League, the Reds dropped just two points, winning 22 of their 23 matches.

Parkinson’s men then continued that trend in League Two as they were beaten just three times and accumulated more points (54) than any other team in the league.

Wrexham will find it tough to replicate those seasons but with the help of a raucous home crowd behind them, the special fans can help continue making the Racecourse a fortress.

Ultimately, it’s their strong home form that will help massively in their push for promotion.
