Sierra Leone-capped Sullay Kaikai extends Cambridge United stay with new one-year contract

Sullay Kaikai has signed a new one-year contract with Cambridge United.

The 28-year-old winger or attacker joined the U's last summer on an initial one-year deal following his release by Milton Keynes Dons after their relegation to Sky Bet League Two.

And the player capped eight times by Sierra Leone, where the London-born player’s parents hail from, had a positive season at the Cledara Abbey Stadium, making 47 appearances in all competitions as the U’s secured League One survival.

The former Crystal Palace trainee’s high point came in February, as he was named Love Cambridge Player of the Month following a string of outstanding performances in which the winger secured four assists and scored one goal.

And Kaikai had no hesitation in becoming the latest player to commit his future under Garry Monk’s tenure.

"I am really happy to sign with the club for another year," he said, with the U’s having returned to pre-season training today.

"The club is heading in an exciting direction and I want to play my part in it. I loved my first full season and it means a lot to have the confidence of the manager, team-mates, and fans.

“It’s about building upon last season, growing within the gaffer’s setup and improving as both an individual and a collective.”

Monk added: "I am delighted Sullay has decided to rejoin us. He is a player who has undoubted qualities and has shown in the past he can provide match-winning moments with the attributes he has.

"I believe there is more to come from him, and with the hard work we are going to demand from the players this season, Sullay has the opportunity to take his game to new levels.”

Kaikai is the fifth member of last season’s squad to put pen to paper on fresh terms this summer after Glenn McConnell, Elias Kachunga, Mamadou Jobe and James Brophy.

It comes off the back of the club securing the permanent signing of loan full-back James Gibbons earlier this week,
