'Struggled': Local media outlet say Man City star had 'one of his poorest games' for his country, gets 5/10

A Manchester City player had one of his worst outings for the national team according to one local outlet.

Euro 2024 has generally been quite a good tournament so far for City players.

Manuel Akanji has given a fantastic account of himself for Switzerland, while Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku have both impressed for Belgium.

John Stones has done OK in a poor England team, and Rodri has also caught the eye in his two appearances for Spain.

Nathan Ake did well in his first couple of outings for the Netherlands. But against Austria, he did not fare well – and one outlet was less than impressed.

Man City defender Nathan Ake struggles as sorry Netherlands lose to Austria

There has been yet more talk about the three England players from Manchester City after the 0-0 draw with Slovenia.

But before England took centre stage last night, another big nation put in a poor performance.

The Netherlands crashed to a 3-2 defeat to Ralf Rangnick’s side, and have now finished third in their group. They will still progress as one of the best third-placed sides, but criticism has been fierce for Ronald Koeman’s side.

The Netherlands were all over the shop defensively, and that was reflected in Football Oranje‘s player ratings.

Ake continued at left-back, but was much worse than his first two appearances against Poland and France.

The publication gave him a 5/10 rating, and said of him: “One of his poorest games in Oranje, Ake struggled at left-back and was eventually replaced.

“Struggled to get forward at all and looked shaky at the back.”

A rare off day for Ake

The Netherlands were really poor against Austria and their players have come in for some real criticism since the game.

It is a shame that Ake could not continue where he left off against France and Poland.

But he will no doubt be keen to bounce back, and it is very possible that he could have the chance to do that against England in the last 16.

It is not very often that Ake has a bad game. The £41 million man is as dependable as they come, so it really does show how poor they were in that game against Austria.
