Jalen Hurts shares initial impressions of new Eagles offense

Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles have a new offense to run in 2024 with offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.

Following a collapse after a 10-1 start in 2023, Eagles’ head coach Nick Sirianni made coordinator changes and there’s seemingly a lot of pressure on Hurts and company. To get it right, the quarterback took new instructions in stride.

That included minicamp and OTAs, trying to get everything down ahead of training camp.

“Well I think it’s still early,” Hurts said. “I think you know just Kellen and coach Doug (Nussmeier) have come in and and been really structured, organized, how to plan from the jump. I think and hope that it’s going to be a big difference for us.

“I didn’t see any difference in what we did you know, the other days than this. You know (minicamp) was something we did for the first time and it was great work.”

Hurts turned the ball over a bit more than he did in 2022 when led Philadelphia to the Super Bowl. He finished the 2023 season with 3,858 yards (a career high), 23 touchdowns (a career high) and 15 interceptions (also a career high). Hurts’ completion percentage was a solid 65.4% and he ran for 605 yards and a career-best 15 touchdowns.

So 38 total touchdowns but there were still questions. It just depends on how you evaluate Hurts and the Eagles.

From Super Bowl favorites to an NFC Wild Card exit on the road, Hurts and Philly might have a make-or-break campaign this fall.

Upon retirements of franchise stalwarts Jason Kelce and Fletcher Cox, Hurts might be expected to take on a larger leadership role. The Eagles addressed needs in free agency on defense with pass rusher Bryce Huff and brought back defensive back CJ Gardner-Johnson, among other moves.

On the flip side of the ball, they extended guard Landon Dickerson and signed running back Saquon Barkley, giving Philadelphia quite the dynamic duo in the backfield.

Hurts should be happy with the rookies involved in the offense too as mid-round picks Will Shipley and Ainias Smith could be immediate contributors.

Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean should go right away in the defensive secondary, which could aid the team as a whole. With what Philadelphia did over the course of the offseason, plus Hurts and company working on the new offense, you’re looking at a Super Bowl contender again.

But as Herm Edwards said: “you play to win the game.” The real test will occur beginning in September.
