As the 2024 NBA Draft got closer, it seemed like Alex Sarr was trending to go toward the top of the board. He could be one of the top two picks Wednesday night, along with fellow Frenchman Zaccharie Risacher, and will be in the green room at Barclays Center.
Ahead of the draft, Sarr showed off his outfit for the evening. He also explained the meaning behind it.
Sarr will wear a cream-colored suit, featuring a double-breasted coat with initials of his family members on the inside. He chose to do that as a way to honor those who helped him with his journey from a young player in France to a potential top pick as he heads to the NBA.
“The outside has the initials of my parents and my brother,” Sarr said. “… That’s my little personal touch. It’s important for me because they supported me a lot through the whole way for me to get there. So I wanted to put it on the suit.”
Sarr played professionally in Australia this past season through the NBL’s Next Stars program. During his 30 games with the Perth Wildcats, he averaged 9.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, an assist and 1.5 blocks across 18 minutes of action per game. At 7-foot-1, he came in as one of the top prospects on the board with a strong chance of going in the top three.
As for his emotions ahead of the draft, Sarr said he’s ready to show off his fit. With his simple choice, he wants to reflect down the road and think he made the right choice by looking good.
“I’m feeling great,” Sarr said. “Exciting. Ready to put my suit on. … I’m just wanting to look good, but something I can look back on 20 years from now and still think it looks good. So I went with a simple color.”
NBA Draft analysts remain high on Sarr as a prospect because of his size and ability to shoot. That’s why, according to On3’s James Fletcher III, it’s only a matter of time Wednesday night before he goes off the board.
“Alex Sarr has shown himself to be one of the prospects with the highest upside while playing in the NBL,” Fletcher wrote. “Playing in a league with established professionals, his tools on both ends of the floor suggest he is ready to play in the NBA and could quickly develop into the next versatile big man. The 7-foot-1 center offers many of the things NBA teams are looking for at this position. He shot 52% from the field and 29.8% from 3, but shows good form on his jumper.
“Sarr has still not worked out with the Atlanta Hawks, with Zaccharie Risacher and Donovan Clingan drawing interest for the top spot. Regardless of where the Hawks go, he will not have to wait long to hear his name called.”
