Romano: Released Manchester United star now made 'dream target' for ambitious club managed by BBC Euro 2024 pundit

Manchester United waved a sad goodbye to defender Raphael Varane at the end of last season.

Looking back, Raphael Varane handled it very well. He cut out any uncertainty ahead of the FA Cup Final, announcing his imminent departure.

This meant his final home game at Old Trafford and the final itself could turn into a celebratory goodbye, with everybody knowing where they stood.

Varane then turned in one of his best performances for the club at Wembley to shut out Erling Haaland, and lead United to a famous final win over Manchester City.

Raphael Varane wanted at Como

Raphael Varane is technically still under contract to Manchester United for another few days, his deal expires on June 30.

The race to win his signature is hotting up ahead of the 31-year-old becoming a free agent on July 1.

The latest team to enter the race are newly promoted Serie A side Como, managed by Cesc Fabregas.

The former Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea midfielder is currently working as a pundit for BBC Sport at Euro 2024.

Fabrizio Romano reports on X: “Como’s dream target for the centre back position is Raphael Varane as free agent.

“Cesc Fabregas wants Varane and they will try to make it happen, but there are several clubs interested in Europe and abroad — not an easy one. Varane will decide his future soon.”

Varane also wanted by Inter Miami

Raphael Varane can still play at the very top level. A lot depends on whether he still wants to.

He has been linked a return to former club Lens, a money-spinning move to the Saudi Pro League, or in America in MLS.

Varane’s former French international colleagues Hugo Lloris and Olivier Giroud have made the moves to Major League Soccer over the past year.

David Beckham owned Inter Miami have an eye on Varane as their next big signing, with talks already held.

So it is Beckham v Fabregas battling it out for Varane. The 2024 FA Cup Winner has a big decision to make.
