Early Championship 24/25 predictor: How Sheffield Wednesday might fare in Rohl's first full season - opinion

The 2024/25 Championship season will be Danny Rohl’s first full campaign as a manager with Sheffield Wednesday.

Danny Rohl took on his first managerial job in October 2023, taking charge of Sheffield Wednesday who were winless in the Championship, and rooted to the foot of the table.

Rohl went on to win 16 games in all competitions. Sheffield Wednesday eventually finished in 20th place of the table and secured their Championship status for another season.

Sheffield Wednesday’s 2024/25 fixture list was released on Wednesday with the Owls kick-starting their campaign with a game vs Plymouth Argyle at Hillsborough.

After their upturn in form under Rohl and their subsequent strong start to the summer transfer window, many might back Sheffield Wednesday to drastically improve on their 20th place finish.

Here we discuss the 2024/25 Championship roster and how Sheffield Wednesday might fare next season…

Who are the favourites for Championship promotion in 2024/25

Inevitably, many will back the relegated Premier League teams to do well next time round; Burnley, Luton Town, and Sheffield United.

Burley though are currently managerless after losing Vincent Kompany to Bayern Munich. Sheffield United meanwhile endured one of the worst Premier League seasons in history last year, and are undergoing some drastic changes to the playing squad this summer.

Of the three, Luton Town seem to be the most stable and better-equipped to secure promotion next season, although the Hatters are yet to make any summer signings.

Elsewhere, Middlesbrough are making some positive early moves in the transfer market and will be expected to challenge, and usual suspects West Brom and Norwich City will be tipped to challenge for a spot in the top six.

Leeds United may be alongside Burnley, Luton, and Sheffield United in the race for the title, after suffering defeat in the play-off final last season.

Who are the favourites for Championship relegation in 2024/25

Opposite to the teams being relegated; the teams coming up from League One will be backed to be near the bottom of the table next season.

Derby County finished in 2nd last season but have a slow start to summer transfer plans, whilst Portsmouth have recently poached Josh Murphy from Oxford United, who helped the U’s win promotion via the League One play-offs last season.

Certain teams struggled to pick up the pace last season and may be expected to struggle again next year; the likes of Blackburn Rovers, Millwall, Plymouth Argyle, and Watford could all be in and around the bottom three if they don’t enjoy positive summer windows.

How will Sheffield Wednesday fare in 2024/25 Championship season

For Sheffield Wednesday fans, after the turnaround last season and the signings made this summer, along with some of the names being linked, it’s difficult not to get carried away when thinking about next season.

The form table from the second half of last season has Sheffield Wednesday well within the top 10. So there’s definitely reason to believe that the Owls can finish well above the drop zone next season.

A mid-table finish would mark a drastically improved Sheffield Wednesday campaign under Rohl, and it would bring some much-needed stability to the club after several years without it.

But there might also be a sense that mid-table would be an underachievement; that’s how highly-rated Rohl is and how well Sheffield Wednesday are expected to perform in the transfer market with him in charge.

Whilst there’s some clear front-runners for the title next season, there doesn’t seem to be a team set to blow away the competition, with the likes of Leeds United set to lose some key players.

The title race could be very open and so too could the race for top six with no clear dark horse starting to emerge so far.

For Sheffield Wednesday, a top half finish would be a success. Anything more would be a bonus, and it certainly feels as though Sheffield Wednesday could surprise a few next time round.
