'Surprise...': Carlton Palmer gives bold Sheffield Wednesday prediction for the 2024/25 season

Former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Carlton Palmer has given his promotion predictions for the upcoming Championship season.

Sheffield Wednesday managed to achieve the unthinkable last season after staying up on the last day of the campaign following three successive victories.

The Owls were rock-bottom and winless in the Championship when former Germany and Southampton assistant-manager Danny Rohl took over in October.

The German boss managed to keep Wednesday up in style after they beat Sunderland away from home on the final day of the season.

Ever since, Rohl has committed his future to the club, alongside fan favourites Liam Palmer and Barry Bannan.

Three signings have come through the doors at Hillsborough as well, most notably Yan Valery, who will work with Rohl again following their time at Southampton.

Sheffield Wednesday will be looking to build their momentum into the new season, with Carlton Palmer making a bold prediction on how their season may pan out.

Carlton Palmer predicts promotion for Sheffield Wednesday

The former Wednesday midfielder has backed Rohl’s side to be a real threat next season.

Palmer has predicted Sheffield Wednesday to go achieve promotion, via Football League World.

Palmer said: “I would go with Leeds, Luton [for promotion], and then I’m going to surprise you and go for Sheffield Wednesday via the play-offs.”

Taking into account only the games from when the German took over back in October, Sheffield Wednesday will have finished in 9th place, suggesting that the Owls could have it in them to push for the top six in the 2024/25 Championship season.

Can Sheffield Wednesday realistically achieve promotion next season

Palmer opted with a Wednesday play-off win as his ‘surprise’ selection, however with the transfer business they have conducted so far, the South Yorkshire outfit could emerge as a likely contender to be in the upper echelons of the league table.

The likes of Valery re-joining up with Rohl is a stroke of genius on the part of the German, who is reliant on attacking and pacey wing-backs as part of his system, something that fits the Tunisian’s description.

Chairman Dejphon Chansiri has also shown that he is willing to back the German manager to propel the Owls up the league and build on last season’s successes, meaning more spectacular incomings could be seen in S6.

The feel-good factor in north Sheffield has never been so prominent in recent years, which results in a tangible atmosphere at Hillsborough Stadium, making it a difficult place for any side to bag a win.

If this momentum continues, Sheffield Wednesday achieving promotion will certainly be no ‘surprise’.
