Middlesbrough must take advantage of Sheffield United misfortune to sign player Carrick knows well – opinion

Middlesbrough should take advantage of Sheffield United to sign a Premier League player in the current transfer window.

Middlesbrough have already made three signings during the 2024 summer transfer window but further additions are expected on Teesside.

With a winger, midfielder and right-back already through the door, a new striker remains a priority for Middlesbrough as they aim to better their eighth-place finish from the previous campaign.

Emmanuel Latte Lath led the line for Boro in 2023/24 and did an adequate job of replacing Chuba Akpom, scoring 16 in 30 Championship games.

Outside of the Ivorian, though, it is obvious the North East outfit need to strengthen up front.

Josh Coburn was used as a backup to Latte Lath in 2023/24 but his campaign was hampered by injury and he scored just five league goals.

That tally is simply not high enough for a side that should be aiming to finish in the top six at the very least when the season gets underway on August 10th.

Middlesbrough should sign Cameron Archer from Aston Villa

One player Middlesbrough should look to target to bolster their striker ranks is Aston Villa’s Cameron Archer.

Archer joined Sheffield United from the Midlands outfit in August 2023, going on to score four goals in 30 Premier League outings.

However, the Blades were relegated from the top flight at the end of 2023/24 and Archer has now returned to Vila.

As per Football Insider, Unai Emery’s side inserted a buy-back clause in the deal when they sold the forward to the Blades and have since activated it.

However, despite only just re-signing him from Sheffield United, Villa are willing to listen to offers for the 22-year-old, with it expected that he will depart the club before the transfer window shuts.

This opens the door for Middlesbrough to swoop in and bring Archer back to the Riverside for a second time.

Archer can help Middlesbrough secure Premier League promotion

Archer’s situation at Villa could be key to Middlesbrough securing promotion to the Premier League in 2024/25.

Boro fans should already be familiar with the Englishman after he spent the 2022/23 season on loan in the North East.

Michael Carrick’s side were able to earn a fourth-place finish in that campaign, losing to Coventry City in the play-off semi-finals.

Archer was one of Boro’s standout stars in that promotion push, scoring 11 goals in just 20 Championship outings.

And now Villa are seemingly willing to part ways with the centre-forward once more, a reunion with Carrick on Teesside could benefit all parties.
