Wayne Rooney admits he has a ‘worry’ about one Liverpool player after what’s happened at Euro 2024

Liverpool manager Arne Slot will be keeping very close tabs on his new group of players over the summer.

He has already spoken to compatriot Virgil van Dijk after taking over the Reds, but it will be quite some team before he meets them all in person.

That is because a long list of Liverpool players are currently away on international duty, participating at the likes of Euro 2024 and Copa America.

In the former in Germany, the Reds initially had 10 players involved, with four currently taking part in the latter in the USA.

Two have, however, already dropped out of Euro 2024, with Vitezslav Jaros and Andy Robertson exiting with the Czech Republic and Scotland respectively.

Wayne Rooney admits Trent Alexander-Arnold worry at Euro 2024

The latter has apologised for his nation’s early exit after they finished bottom of Group A, with the Czech Republic having finished bottom of Group F.

Plenty of Anfield stars have, however, progressed in Germany, two of which are representing England under Gareth Southgate.

Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold are currently on duty with the Three Lions, with former England striker Wayne Rooney having shared a concern about the latter at the major tournament.

“Now when it’s getting a bit tough and there are questions being asked, if you’ve got a group of many young players, naturally they will navigate to each other and they’ll be sitting there and wondering how they’ll get through it, wondering why these questions are being asked,” Rooney said on the Football Daily podcast.

“If you’ve got one or two it’s an easy one for the senior players to deal with, but for 13 players who have not been to a tournament, I think that’s a bit too many.

“So that was a concern, and now Gareth has a difficult decision to make in midfield. I assume he’ll play [Kobbie] Mainoo there now after his performance, and the worry is where’s Trent’s head at, where’s Conor Gallagher’s head at after getting taken off at half-time.

“So you’re relying again now on Mainoo or [Adam] Wharton, which for those two is difficult.”

Should the Liverpool man return to the England starting XI?

Alexander-Arnold has stolen the headlines at Euro 2024 alongside Southgate, largely because of the role the former has played.

A right-back for his club, the Anfield ace has been used in midfield by his national team manager in Germany.

And that has drawn plenty of criticism from many watching on, with Chris Sutton one of many who believe the midfield experiment with Alexander-Arnold hasn’t worked.

His fellow pundit Gary Lineker does, however, feel sympathy towards the Liverpool man, claiming he has been ‘hung out to dry’.

After starting the first two matches against Serbia and Denmark, Alexander-Arnold then appeared from the bench against Slovenia, with Gallagher having replaced him from the start.

It remains to be seen what approach Southgate will take in the knockout stages, with England drawn to face Slovakia after topping Group C.
