Gareth Southgate was born on September 3rd, 1970. So, at the time of writing, he is currently 53 years old.

Where is Gareth Southgate from?

Southgate was born in Watford, Hertfordshire.

He attended Padnell Infant School in Cowplain, Pound Hill Junior School, and Hazelwick School in Crawley.

The former Boro ace left school with eight O-Levels at grades between A and C before studying at Croydon College between 1987 and 1989.

When did Gareth Southgate play for Middlesbrough?

Southgate signed for Middlesbrough on July 11th, 2001, from Aston Villa for a fee of £6.5m.

The Englishman made 204 appearances for the Teessiders in all competitions, scoring four goals and providing four assists.

Southgate’s final game as a player was for Middlesbrough on May 10th, 2006.

When was Gareth Southgate Middlesbrough manager?

Steve Gibson appointed Gareth Southgate as Middlesbrough manager in June 2006 after Steve McClaren left his post to become England boss.

The former centre-back took charge of 151 games during his time in the Riverside dugout, guiding Boro to a 12th-place finish in the 2006/07 Premier League season and a 13th-place finish the campaign after.

Middlesbrough were then relegated to the Championship at the close of 2008/09, ending the season 19th in the table.

Southgate was sacked on October 20th, 2009, despite the club being one point off top spot in England’s second tier at the time.

Did Gareth Southgate play for England?

Southgate made his debut for England’s senior side as a substitute against Portugal on December 12th, 1995, under then-manager, Terry Venables.

Unfortunately for the Middlesbrough legend, his time as an England player is most remembered for his penalty miss at Euro 96.

England faced Germany in the semi-final, with the game level at 1-1 after 90 minutes and extra time.

Southgate stepped up to take England’s sixth penalty, with all 11 previous takers having found the target. His effort was saved and the Three Lions were knocked out of the tournament as a result.

Southgate earned 57 England caps during his time as a player, including six at the European Championships and two at the World Cup.

When did Southgate become England coach?

The ex-Boro star returned to management on August 2nd, 2013, replacing Stuart Pearce as England’s under-21 coach.

Southgate was then put in temporary charge of England’s senior team on September 27th, 2016, after Sam Allardyce resigned.

The 53-year-old was appointed as England manager on a permanent basis on November 30th, 2016, signing a four-year contract.

The England coach intended to call up now-Everton defender Michael Keane but a blunder somewhere at the FA meat Michael’s twin brother, Will, was called up instead.

Southgate said: “We had an admin error so Michael wasn’t registered. I don’t know exactly why yet, it’s not one I’ve seen before.

“I really feel for the lad because he’s key to what we’re doing. But we adapted to that, with Nathaniel going in, who was very composed, and these are things you’ll face along the way.”
