Ariana Grande upsets family of serial killer victim after confession - 'It's not funny'

Ariana Grande has upset the family of Jeffrey Dahmer victim Tony Hughes after comments she made involving the serial killer.

Ariana Grande, the 30-year-old American singer and chart-topper behind more hit songs than you could care to count, recently caused quite a stir after an appearance on the Podcrushed podcast with hosts Penn Badgley, Nava Kavelin, and Sophie Ansari. She recalled a Q&A she did with “young fans” back in the day, and she was asked who she would most like to have dinner with, alive or dead. She chose Jeffrey Dahmer, the notorious serial killer who murdered 17 people between 1978 and 1991. Some fans were appalled, and so were the family of one of his victims…

Family of Jeffrey Dahmer victim feel Ariana Grande is ‘sick in her mind’

“Jeffrey Dahmer is pretty fascinating,” Ariana remembers beginning her answer at the Q&A. “I think I would have loved to have met him. You know, maybe with a third party or someone involved. But I have questions.’”

She admitted she was “infatuated with serial killers when I was younger,” and the family of Dahmer victim Tony Hughes caught wind of what the pop icon said about meeting the Milwaukee Cannibal.

“To me, it seems like she’s sick in her mind,” Shirley, Tony’s mother, told TMZ. “It’s not fancy or funny to say you would have wanted to do dinner with him. It’s also not something you should say to young people, which she says she did.”

Tony was deaf and non-verbal, portrayed by Rodney Burford in the 2022 Netflix series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which starred Evan Peters as the titular killer. He was tragically murdered by Dahmer in 1991.

Shirley didn’t refrain from revealing how upset and emotional it made her upon hearing what Ariana said, and she admits to being surprised that the singer laughed when recounting the Q&A story. She wishes for Ariana and others out there to understand that the victims’ families endure genuine pain when the infamous killer is referenced and spoken about.

Tony Hughes’ sister wants an apology from Ariana Grande

It wasn’t just Shirley who reacted to the Ariana podcast appearance, but Tony’s sister Barbara too.

She expressed her belief that discussing Dahmer in such a manner only serves to glamorize him. After hearing what Ariana said, she wants to hear an apology from her, with the hope of educating fans that mythologizing serial killers in this way isn’t acceptable behavior.

“Unfortunately, until it happens to her and her family, she just doesn’t know what we have been through,” Barbara argued.

The Hughes family was also angered when the aforementioned biographical series was released and became a colossal streaming hit for Netflix. Any reminder of Tony’s pain is a pain they heartbreakingly share.
