Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale names the former Liverpool striker who gave him ‘one of the best days’ of his whole life

Liverpool players are not having such a brilliant time of things at Euro 2024 this summer.

The Reds initially had 10 players heading to Germany to represent their countries, with another two cut from provisional squads.

However, with the tournament’s group stage now over, three Liverpool players have headed home with a further three yet to feature at all.

From Arne Slot’s point of view, he possibly won’t mind his squad going out of the competition early doors. It only means they’ll be back at the AXA Training Centre sooner.

Nevertheless, it’s clear that Liverpool players have had better days at previous European Championships.

Aaron Ramsdale hails Daniel Sturridge goal

Although three Liverpool players have indeed already crashed out of the Euros, that leaves seven still remaining.

Of that group, the only one to find the net so far has been Cody Gakpo for the Netherlands. There’s a strong argument that Gakpo has been the standout performer for his country so far.

The 25-year-old is not the only Reds forward taking part in Germany though, and Diogo Jota will hope for a big moment with Portugal in the knockout stages.

One Liverpool player who did come up trumps while performing at the Euros was former striker Daniel Sturridge.

Sturridge possibly didn’t quite have the career he should have had for England. Despite being one of the best striker’s in the country, he won only 26 caps scoring eight times.

Two of those goals came at major tournaments, with his late strike to win a tense group stage match with Wales in Euro 2016 easily the most memorable.

Looking back on the goal for England’s YouTube channel on Wednesday, Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale admitted that it was a special moment for him personally.

“Sturridge’s goal gave me one of the best days of my life,” raved the 26-year-old. “I was in Magaluff!”

What next for Liverpool players at the Euros?

Despite there being seven Liverpool players left at the Euros, they represent only four different countries.

For England, Trent Alexander-Arnold has lost his place in the starting XI and with Joe Gomez yet to play a minute, Reds fans will have little reason to watch the Three Lions take on Slovenia on Sunday.

Ibrahima Konate is another who’s yet to get on the pitch. He’ll be hoping for better when France play Belgium on Monday.

Jota and Portugal are then in action later the same day, with Liverpool’s Dutch trio rounding out the last-26 on Tuesday against Romania.

Seven players and only two – Gakpo and Virgil van Dijk – more or less guaranteed to start. That’s a little disappointing.

Still, there could be a Sturridge moment lying in wait for one of our boys. Let’s hope so.
