'Great opportunity': Director reacts as Manchester United close in on appointing Erik ten Hag favourite

Manchester United are looking at any way in which to improve upon last season’s disappointing campaign with no stone being left unturned.

Erik ten Hag oversaw an eighth-placed finish last season, which simply isn’t good enough for any Manchester United boss.

Ineos have still decided to stick with Ten Hag, putting their faith in the Dutchman rather than moving to replace him.

The next step for United is to build around Ten Hag and back him for the future.

That likely means signings and United fans are no doubt keen to find out just who will be arriving in the transfer window.

Yet United could look at other ways to improve and that includes changing up the coaching staff around Ten Hag…

Manchester United set to land Rene Hake

United have already been linked with adding a Dutch coach this week.

Reports suggest that former United goal machine Ruud van Nistelrooy is on the verge of a return to Old Trafford.

Van Nistelrooy is set to reject the chance to become Burnley boss in favour of working alongside Ten Hag at United.

Fans are excited to see Van Nistelrooy return but United are lining up another move.

Go Ahead Eagles boss Rene Hake is expected to quit his post and join Ten Hag’s coaching staff.

Ten Hag and Hake know each other well from their time together at FC Twente and now look set to reunite.

Fabrizio Romano has taken to social media to claim that the deal is imminent with Hake set to join United’s coaching staff.

Go Ahead Eagles finished ninth in the Eredivisie last season, only ten points behind Ajax.

Hake is now ready to give up that mid-table spot in the Dutch top flight in order to become part of Ten Hag’s team.

Go Ahead Eagles chief on Hake move

This will be a major blow for Go Ahead Eagles and probably an unexpected one.

Ten Hag’s relationship with Hake appears to have been the crucial factor though and Go Ahead Eagles director Paul Bosvelt has commented on the move.

Bosvelt – formerly of Manchester City – has told Sport Nieuws that the club are fully aware of United’s interest in Hake.

However, at the time of speaking – earlier on Thursday – United had yet to make an official move for Hake.

Bosvelt was under no illusions, accepting that the chance to move to United is a ‘great opportunity’ for Hake as he nears a move to Old Trafford.

“We are aware of the interest, but United has not yet reported to us. We understand that it is a great opportunity. But we will have to wait and see,” said Bosvelt.

Van Nistelrooy and Hake appear United-bound and that may just spark rumours about the futures of Ten Hag’s current coaches Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren.
