'On his way': Fabrizio Romano says 'invaluable' player is about to leave Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest are now set to wave goodbye to one of their players who joined the club during Steve Cooper’s tenure.

Over the last couple of weeks, Forest have found themselves in a position where they have needed to generate some funds through player sales.

The looming PSR deadline has been a concern for numerous Premier League sides with Forest and Everton falling foul of it last season.

Nuno Espirito Santo‘s side were handed a points deduction last term which saw them narrowly avoid the drop back down to the Championship.

Naturally, they will be desperate to avoid any further penalties going into the 2024/25 season with player sales being targeted before the end of the month.

And it seems as if there is one player who is now set to confirm his move away from Forest before the end of the week.

Nottingham Forest set to lose player who was labelled ‘invaluable’

Forest have already brought a small chunk of money back into the club this summer with the sale of Remo Freuler to Serie A side Bologna.

However, that is not quite the level of money required to ease Forest of their PSR concerns this month.

But Evangelos Marinakis is not stopping there with another exit set to be confirmed over the coming hours.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Moussa Niakhate is set to be confirmed as a Lyon player with the centre-back jetting off to France today.

The deal to see Niakhate sign for the Ligue 1 side is believed to be in the value of £20m having struggled for regular game time last season.

Despite being hailed “invaluable” by Cooper, Niakhate was able to make just 15 starts for Forest in the Premier League last season so a transfer fee of £20m is not to be sniffed at given he is not exactly first choice at the City Ground.

How Moussa Niakhate’s sale will affect Nottingham Forest’s PSR concerns

Nottingham Forest News has spoken to TBR Football‘s financial expert Adam Williams who has provided the lowdown on how Niakhate’s move to Lyon will ease Forest’s PSR woes.

“In terms of PSR, the goalposts shifted for Forest in 2023-24,” he told Nottingham Forest News.

“As it was their second season in the top flight, their allowable loss for the three-year assessment window was raised by £22m to £83m.

“That will go to £105m after 30th June, when the new rolling PSR monitoring period ticks over to 2023-24.

“But for now, it is that £83m figure they need to hit. While revenue is set to have risen by the end of the season, most analysis suggested that £20-30m of player sale profit is needed to get to the £83m threshold.

“That figure would have been substantially higher had it not been for Brennan Johnson’s departure to Spurs.

“Niakhate’s exit could well get them over the line. And given the financial crisis in French football at present, Forest fans should be breathing a sigh of relief that Lyon have the capacity to get this one done.”
