Plans for City Fibre telecommunications exchange on part of long-abandoned RAF Sudbury airfield, at Chilton

Plans have been submitted for a new telecommunications exchange as part of the rollout of full fibre technology in Sudbury.

City Fibre is asking Babergh Council for planning permission to build and site fibre exchange telecommunications infrastructure to provide full fibre (gigabit) service, on land at Chilton Airfield, north of Waldingfield Road.

The proposal also includes 2.4-metre high palisade fencing and gates.

Documents submitted to planners said: “The site predominantly comprises an area of previously developed land that was formerly in use as part of Sudbury Airfield, a long since abandoned RAF station.

“The site comprises an area made of concrete hardstanding, some of which is now covered by low-lying vegetation overgrowth. The former aircraft hanger buildings lie a short distance south-west and are currently in various business uses.”

The proposed fibre exchange would serve Sudbury and surrounding areas, providing full fibre internet to residents and businesses.

The planning statement said the proposal formed part of ‘Project Gigabit’, a central Government contract to provide gigabit broadband to about 79,500 premises in more rural areas of Suffolk.

The fibre exchange would comprise two single-storey cabins built on a concrete base, with an external cabinet and two emergency back-up generators.

City Fibre was approached for comment.
