Report: Middlesbrough now set to loan ‘huge talent’ to Championship rivals this summer

Middlesbrough will allow a player dubbed a ‘huge talent’ by Michael Carrick to leave the club on loan for a Championship rival.

It has been a busy summer at the Riverside so far, with Middlesbrough already signing three new players.

Boro have brought in Luke Ayling from Leeds United, Delano Burgzorg from German outfit Mainz 05 and Aidan Morris is on his way to Teesside.

There have also been a few outgoings in the North East, with several more players potentially set to leave the club before deadline day in August.

Paddy McNair and Liam Roberts left Middlesbrough on free transfers earlier this month when their contracts expired.

Boro then confirmed on June 27th that left-back Hayden Coulson had made a permanent switch to League One side, Blackpool.

There could still be further outgoings at the club in the coming months though, with right-back Anfernee Dijksteel made available for sale.

Turkish outfit Trabzonspor also reportedly made an offer to Middlesbrough for the signing of Dan Barlaser earlier this month.

Sammy Silvera to join Portsmouth on loan from Middlesbrough

Now, it appears another Middlesbrough player is closing in on an exit from the club.

As per Teesside Live, winger Sammy Silvera is understood to be close to joining Portsmouth on loan.

The North East outfit are hopeful that the move will provide the forward with some much-needed Championship experience in the 2024/25.

Silvera’s reported move to the newly-promoted team is not expected to include an option to purchase, with Boro keen to asses him upon his return to the club next year.

The 23-year-old joined Middlesbrough from Central Coast Mariners last summer and made 37 Championship appearances.

He scored six and assisted three in all competitions in the previous campaign and was dubbed a ‘huge talent’ by Michael Carrick back in March, as per the Northern Echo.

Carrick said: “It was a huge step for him to come over in the summer. The intensity in this league in comparison to what he’s been used to, it is a big change, but he’s dealt with it really well.

“He’s got huge talent and he’s a really dangerous player.”

Should Middlesbrough loan out Sammy Silvera

The decision to loan out Silvera in search of more minutes does make sense, even though he made 42 appearances in 2023/24.

However, of those 42 appearances, only 16 came as a starter, while the winger played just 33% of Boro’s Championship minutes last season.

While the move seems like a wise one for the player, his exit could hamper Middlesbrough throughout the season.

If Silvera leaves, the North East outfit will only have new signing Burgzorg and Alex Gilbert as natural left-wing options.

The latter impressed with Huddersfield Town last season but there is always the risk he will need time to adapt to Carrick’s system.

As for Gilbert, he only played 12 league games last term and the majority of those saw him deployed through the middle.

In turn, Boro may need to sign a replacement for Silvera in the summer or put a lot of faith in Burgzorg to deliver in his first season.
