'Twists and turns': Michael Carrick shares Middlesbrough transfer state of play after recent signings

Michael Carrick has dropped a hint over further potential incomings at Middlesbrough this summer following a flurry of early activity.

Middlesbrough have been one of the more active clubs on the transfer front in the Championship this summer.

After finishing four points outside the top six last season, it was clear Boro needed to strengthen their squad in the current window if they were to make a push for promotion in 2024/25.

The transfer window has only been open for a few weeks but the Teessides have already brought in several new faces.

With right-back an area of concern, Boro opted to sign Luke Ayling on a free transfer from Leeds United after a successful loan spell at the Riverside last term.

Ayling’s capture was followed by Delano Burgzorg joining from German outfit Mainz 05, providing Michael Carrick with some much-needed attacking depth.

And while the deal has not been made official by the club yet, Aidan Morris is set to sign for the North East outfit from Columbus Crew.

Michael Carrick hints at more Middlesbrough signings later in window

The 2024 summer transfer window so far has been a stark contrast to what Middlesbrough experienced this time last year.

Boro lost a number of big names and were scrambling to strengthen their squad in time for the season getting underway.

But with two (soon to be three) names already through the door, Carrick has plenty of time to embed his new additions before the season kicks off on August 10th.

However, there could still be further additions at the Riversides in the coming months, with Carrick hinting at such a possibility recently.

Speaking about getting deals done early, the former midfielder hinted that Boro could still make further additions to their squad because some deals take ‘different twists and turns’, meaning they have to be done later in the window, as quoted by the Northern Echo.

He said: “We tried, it was something we really focused on.

“It’s not always easy or possible and just because someone might come in later it doesn’t mean it’s a last minute decision, it just means the process takes different twists and turns.”

Middlesbrough should focus on striker signing

With three areas of the pitch strengthened already this summer, Middlesbrough should now focus on finding an adequate backup for Emmanuel Latte Lath.

The striker scored 16 goals in 30 league games for the North East outfit last summer but outside of the 25-year-old, Boro are lacking quality up front.

Josh Coburn is currently Latte Lath’s understudy but he scored just five goals in the Championship last term, a figure that is unlikely to be enough to help the club push for promotion in 2024/25.

The striker department remains a priority for Middlesbrough in the summer window but Carrick will need to wise in his search.

Whoever is brought in must be willing to take a backseat, while still having the ability to score plenty of goals when called upon.
