Liverpool set for instant £58m transfer budget boost on Monday as three signings on cards

Liverpool will effectively have £58m added to their transfer budget on Monday as Arne Slot prepares to shape the squad in his image.

Slot inherited a squad from Jurgen Klopp that is not in need of dramatic wholesale changes but which most supporters agree could do with a freshen up.

Luckily, Liverpool have ample headroom in terms of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) for the new manager to make his mark.

Ultimately, how much the Merseysiders spend this summer will depend on to what extent John Henry and Fenway Sports Group are prepared to bankroll the investment.

Boston-based FSG are not known for sanctioning lavish spending but rather on funding investment through sustainable growth.

And with a new set of PSR rules being trialled on a non-binding basis from 2024-25, the group’s strategy could be set to pay off in the coming years.

Liverpool have £58m PSR headroom under UEFA rules

Analysis from world-renowned football finance expert Swiss Ramble projects that Liverpool have plenty of wriggle room under UEFA’s PSR system, known as Licensing and Financial Sustainability Regulations.

UEFA’s model limits clubs to making a £51m loss over a rolling three-year period, with an extra £25m leeway if a club is deemed to be in robust financial health.

A new component of the system which will eventually limit clubs to spending a maximum of 70 per cent of their turnover on wages, transfer and agent fees.

In 2024-25, the cap will stand at 80 per cent.

Swiss Ramble’s analysis finds that Liverpool have ample headroom under both elements of UEFA’s system.

Their squad cost ratio comes in at 61 per cent, while they have £58m worth of room to manoeuvre in terms of the allowable loss ratio.

That effectively means Liverpool can add that figure to their transfer budget when the next UEFA assessment period begins on Monday – on the proviso that FSG are willing to fund it.

Liverpool and Slot eyeing three signings

It is expected to be a relatively quiet summer for Liverpool, but they are intent on making a handful of changes in different positions.

The Mirror are reporting that Slot wants to make new additions at centre-back, in midfield and upfront.

It is expected that any signings they do make will be as cover for their existing first XI, and they will only pull the trigger if the right profile of player is available.

Wolves full-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, who is also capable of playing in a front three, is one name linked.

Bologna centre-half Riccardo Calafiori is also a reported target, with transfer journalist Fabrizio Romana claiming the 22-year-old is unlikely to remain in Italy this summer.
