'Genuine interest': Journalist says Tottenham are keen on £26m midfielder compared to Nicolo Barella

Over the coming weeks, Tottenham Hotspur have the opportunity to bolster their ranks and aim for a top-four finish next season.

Ange Postecoglou enjoyed a solid maiden campaign at Spurs, securing a Europa League spot, but there’s still a lot of work to do to get back to the top.

Plenty of top players have been linked with a move to Tottenham in recent weeks, including numerous midfielders.

With uncertainty around the futures of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur, it’s not surprising to see Spurs potentially looking at midfield reinforcements.

Transfer insider Ben Jacobs has now spoken about Tottenham’s midfield situation and mentioned a player Spurs have “genuine interest” in.

Tottenham keen on Davide Frattesi

The player in question is Inter Milan star Davide Frattesi, who is currently representing Italy at Euro 2024.

Back in May, Inter Live claimed that Spurs are considering an “unexpected” €30million (£26million) move to sign the 24-year-old.

Now, Jacobs has mentioned Frattesi in conversation with Last Word on Spurs, saying he could be an option if Bentancur leaves.

“I think that the only club I’d heard were looking for Bentancur was Galatasaray,” said Jacobs. “And at the moment there’s not much in those links.

“If there was to be a scenario where Bentancur went, perhaps somebody like Davide Frattesi could come onto the radar and maybe that changes the situation a little bit.

“There’s genuine interest in that player, but at the moment they’re planning with Bentancur and Bissouma for next season.”

Who is Tottenham target Davide Frattesi?

Davide Frattesi is a 24-year-old midfielder who plies his trade for Serie A champions Inter Milan, who he is set to join permanently this summer after spending the last season on loan from Sassuolo.

He came through the ranks at AS Roma after also spending time at Lazio’s academy, but really made a name for himself at Sassuolo, via loan spells at Ascoli, Empoli and Monza.

Frattesi, who has also won 17 caps for the reigning European champions, scored eight goals and provided seven assists in 42 appearances for the Nerazzurri in the 2023/24 campaign.

His style of play has been compared to that of Inter and Italy teammate Nicolo Barella.

In 2022, Frattesi described Barella to Sky Sport Italia – via OneFootball – as “the player who inspires me the most in Serie A.”

When it was suggested that he has a comparable style of play, he said: “That’s a flattering comparison because Nicolo is one of the best, if not the best, midfielders in Serie A.

“I hope that I can retrace his steps.”
