Steve Gibson is the owner of Middlesbrough Football Club and has a long and storied history with his local team.

Middlesbrough owner Steve Gibson has been crucial to the club’s success over the years, overseeing the highs and lows of his boyhood team.

Gibson grew up in the Park End area of Middlesbrough and has been a fan of the club since he was a child.

The Boro chairman helped the Teessiers win their first and only trophy in 2004, beating Bolton Wanderers to lift the League Cup.

During his time in charge, the North East outfit have also enjoyed several runs in Europe, including reaching the UEFA Cup final in 2006.

Gibson, along with manager Michael Carrick, is currently trying to get the club out of the Championship and back into the Premier League for the first time since 2017.

When did Steve Gibson buy Middlesbrough?

Gibson first took up a role at Middlesbrough in 1984 when he joined the club’s board as their youngster ever director at 26 years of age.

In 1986, Gibson helped save the club from liquidation by forming a consortium.

After saving Boro, Gibson bought Scottish & Newcastle plc’s shares in the club in 1993 and succeeded Colin Henderson as the club’s chairman in 1994, owning roughly 90% of the club.

How much did Steve Gibson pay for Middlesbrough?

It is not known how much Steve Gibson paid to purchase Scottish & Newcastle’s shares in the club, but the current chairman has spent a small fortune on keeping the club afloat over the years.

During Boro’s battle with liquidation in 1986, Gibson, along with the other members of the consortium, put forward a total of £825,000 in order to keep the club afloat.

In December 2023, Gibson converted almost £107 million worth of the club’s debt into shares and continues to financially back his side to this day.

How did Steve Gibson make his money?

In 1981, following a small loan of £1,000 from his father, Gibson founded Bulkhaul Limited, a company dedicated to the global transportation of bulk liquids, powders, and gases.

The Teessider is the majority owner of the Gibson O’Neill Company Ltd, the holding company for Bulkhaul Limited.

Gibson O’Neill was reported to have an annual turnover of £197,692,000, with annual profits of £29,720,000, in 2011.

As well as Bulkhaul, Gibson owns Rockliffe Hall Hotel, which made a profit of £2.6m in 2022.

Who owned Middlesbrough before Steve Gibson?

Before Steve Gibson took majority control of the club in 1993, the club was saved by a consortium made up of Bulkhaul Limited, ICI, Scottish & Newcastle, and London businessman Henry Moszkowicz.

Colin Henderson was named as Middlesbrough chairman in 1986.

Along with Gibson, Henderson played a pivotal role in securing the survival of the club in 1986, signing the forms that guaranteed its continued existence.

Henderson was succeeded by Gibson as chairman in 1993 and unfortunately passed away in June of 2012 at 75 years old.

Gibson said: “Middlesbrough Football Club would not have survived without Colin Henderson.

“When the club and the town needed a giant, Colin was the man. I liked him and respected him immensely.”

Steve Gibson is currently married to Polly Gibson. They tied the knot in July 2019 in St Michael’s Church in Coxwold. They had been together for 19 years before marriage.

Polly is Gibson’s second wife after his first marriage to Vicky. Steve had a daughter named Katie with his first wife.

Steve Gibson is also the nephew of former Middlesbrough and current Stoke City defender, Ben Gibson.
