Amber Heard 'changes' her name and it'll be difficult for Johnny Depp

Amber Heard has reportedly changed her name, and it’s suspected that the meaning behind it may rub Johnny Depp the wrong way.

Fans were used to seeing acclaimed actor Johnny Depp on their screens in movies like Pirates of the Caribbean and other endlessly rewatchable classics. However, in 2022, many were tuning in to watch his trial involving ex-wife and Aquaman actress Amber Heard. The Hollywood couple tied the knot in 2015 and divorced in 2017, the court case that followed leaving millions at home gripped. Johnny sued Amber for defamation. Meanwhile, she countersued. Ultimately, the outcome resulted in Johnny being awarded $15 million (capped at $10.35m) after a jury reached the verdict that an article published by Amber was indeed defamatory. On the other hand, she was awarded $2 million in damages for her counterclaim. With the trial in the rear-view mirror, Amber has reportedly changed her name.

Amber Heard has moved to Spain and changed her name to Martha Jane Cannary

The 38-year-old American actress moved to Spain months after the trial concluded, People reports, but a more recent update details she has reportedly changed her name to Martha Jane Cannary.

If the name sounds familiar, it just might be. It’s the real name of American frontierswoman and sharpshooter Calamity Jane. She was portrayed by screen icon Doris Day in the 1953 musical-Western film, Calamity Jane.

The publication El Diario de Mallorca reported on the name change, and they suggested it could pique Johnny’s interest for all the wrong reasons.

“The choice of this identity, which appears at the entrance of her new Mallorcan home, draws much attention,” they wrote. “Especially as Johnny Depp always maintained that his family trace their roots to ancient Native American tribes and that his great-great-grandmother was Cherokee.”

Amber—or Martha, rather—is living in Mallorca, the largest island of the Balearic Islands, with her daughter Oonagh Paige, who was born via surrogate in July 2021.

Celebrity Tidbit and GRV Media has reached out to Amber Heard’s representatives for comment.

Johnny Depp has previously addressed his ‘Native American’ heritage

In the 2013 blockbuster The Lone Ranger, Johnny portrayed the character of a Comanche named Tonto, and in 2011 he discussed his aims in tackling the role during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“I guess I have some Native American [in me] somewhere down the line,” he explained. “My great-grandmother was quite a bit of Native American, she grew up Cherokee or maybe Creek Indian. Makes sense in terms of coming from Kentucky, which is rife with Cherokee and Creek.”

This caused him to approach the character with a personal goal in mind.

“I started thinking about Tonto and what could be done in my own small way try to—’eliminate’ isn’t possible—but reinvent the relationship,” he reflected. “To attempt to take some of the ugliness thrown on the Native Americans, not only in The Lone Ranger, but the way Indians were treated throughout history of cinema, and turn it on its head.”

Sadly, the movie turned out to be a box-office bomb and was poorly received by critics. You can’t win ’em all, right Johnny?
