Christina Applegate apologizes to daughter for not seeing signs of her condition earlier

Uploaded on Tuesday, June 25th 2024, Sadie joined her mom Christina on her podcast MeSsy, co-hosted by Jamie-Lynn Sigler.

Both were able to open up about their respective struggles, as well as their worries for one another. POTS is a condition that causes abnormally large increases in heart rate, occurring when sitting or standing. It tends to be more extreme the higher the temperature you’re in. Additionally, Sadie has Misophonia, resulting in a decreased tolerance to certain sounds.

‘I’m so sorry Sadie Grace,” Christina told her daughter on the pod after confessing her regret she didn’t suspect her daughter’s condition earlier.

“She wears layers of clothes on 90-degree days and she hates PE,” she recalled, acknowledging signs. “Sorry school, not a big fan of PE or physical things.” She admits she felt similarly when she was a child. “I feel so horrible that we didn’t pay attention to it,” she said in hindsight.

“I just didn’t see it at home, babe,” Christina told Sadie, who was experiencing issues at school as a result of POTS. Sadie replied “It’s okay” when her mom apologized. She explained that her experiences have helped her empathize more with her mother’s struggle with MS.

“When my mom’s like, ‘Oh, I’m kind of in pain right now. Oh, I’m having tremors.’ If I didn’t have this, I probably would be like, ‘don’t really care. I don’t know what you’re talking about.'”

Sadie Applegate explains what it’s like living with POTS

The podcast episode gave Sadie a platform to spotlight what it’s been like for her to navigate living with the condition.

“When I stand up, I get really, really dizzy and my legs get really weak, and I feel like I’m going to pass out,’ she walked listeners through.

On particularly bad days, when it’s incredibly hot outside, she even faints. Yet, she said that her symptoms were initially bypassed and somewhat disregarded by teachers and healthcare aids at school.

“Last year, in sixth grade, I would go to the nurse multiple times a day for it because I always felt like I was going to pass out,” she recalled. Despite her insistence that something was wrong, she admitted she would be told to head back to class in multiple instances.

She added that PE proved a massive issue for her, having to run laps and keep up with the other students. “Them not doing anything about it definitely hurt me physically and emotionally,” she reflected.
