Dogs are usually familiar with their favorite words like ‘walk’ and ‘ball’, but did you know that it is possible for our furry friends to understand sign language? Meet the sign-language fluent corgi whose intelligence has shocked TikTok viewers.
Dog’s intelligent reaction to deaf owner’s sign language
Research shows that the average dog understands particular words and phrases, and according to ZME Science, the most common words dogs respond to are often their own name, as well as command-like words like ‘sit’, ‘come’, ‘down’, ‘stay’, ‘wait’, ‘no’, ‘OK’ and ‘leave it’.
Animals Matter explains that dogs often learn to recognize familiar words, from food-related words or words like “walk” or “bed” that indicate familiar or desired activities. Well, introducing a pet dog who understands sign language.
A TikTok user known as The Signing D recently shared a video explaining that his wife is deaf and when the couple moved in together, his corgi named Eowyn (inspired by The Lord of the Rings, of course), was quick to start picking up on the sign language used at home.
At first, the owner thought this was an amazing trait until a problem arose when the very smart corgi began to learn the signs for all the ‘fun words’ she likes…
In the clip, the dog owner demonstrates why the couple must be careful when discussing things like ‘dinner’ because Eowyn’s ears immediately perked up when she recognized her owner signing the buzzword.
The owner then went on to sign the word ‘ball’ and the corgi quickly got very excited. Eowyn started barking and jumping up, searching for a ball to play with.
While some pet owners try to train their dog to walk on a leash when they won’t listen, it seems this dog owner has the opposite problem as Eowyn listens and observes too much!
Adorable pet dogs have the ability to learn sign language
It’s true, dogs can understand basic sign language! The Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors published an advice sheet showing dog owners how to teach basic sign language to their canines.
Although the fact the corgi understands sign language is really cool, the owner reveals that it becomes a problem because they’ll be having a conversation and, without them realizing, “the dog will catch on” to what they’re saying and get super excited.
The Signing D’s viral video has reached over a whopping 20 million views, and the comment section is filled with praise for the adorable dog Eowyn.
One TikTok user suggested that the sign-language understanding dog is a perfect example of ‘why we don’t deserve them.’
