I tried peeling hard-boiled eggs using the simple tap hack and it blew my mind

There isn’t a method I haven’t tried to peel hard-boiled eggs easily and the latest one I discovered is the best so far.

There are plenty of easy hacks on TikTok but not all of them are to be trusted. While I was mind blown by the tea bag strain hack or the 10-second technique to make multiple tiny zip-lock bags out of a big one, the Skittles popcorn was a total disaster.

I tried the tap method to peel hard-boiled eggs

This is perhaps one of the easiest methods after the hack with a Mason jar to peel hard-boiled eggs. Here’s how it’s done.

  • Hold the raw egg in one hand and a spoon in the other.
  • Use the back of the spoon to gently tap the top of the egg.
  • Tap repeatedly until you hear a crack inside the egg – the sound of the membrane separating from the shell.
  • Place the eggs for boiling once you’re finished tapping.
  • Boil them for 5 to 7 minutes or use the 5-5-5 method for perfectly-boiled eggs.
  • Once done put them in a bowl of ice water. Wait for 5 minutes before you peel.

I couldn’t be more impressed

I noticed that the eggs had developed a crack while boiling but the whites or the yolks remained intact within the shell.

The majority of the shells separated easily in one piece when I started to peel the eggs; it took me mere seconds – less than half the time I usually take to separate the shells from the boiled eggs.

I give this hack a thumbs-up and highly recommend trying it yourself. It is also oddly satisfying to hear the sound of the membrane separate from the shell – or, maybe it’s just me!

Ensure not to tap too hard, or else the raw egg can end up breaking or causing cracks, making it unsuitable to boil. If this doesn’t work, try the no-peel hack suggested by a TikTok nutritionist.
