Report: Whether or not Anthony Gordon will start for England against Slovakia on Sunday

Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon has been in the news of late.

Indeed, with England having underwhelmed at Euro 2024 thus far, there has been a lot of clamour for Gordon to get the nod from Gareth Southgate.

The Newcastle star impressed in an admittedly very short cameo on Tuesday against Slovenia and has been impressing the likes of Kieran Trippier in training.

Gordon has spoken of the problems he can cause defenders and is believed to be raring to go despite falling off his bike in training and sustaining some nasty looking cuts.

The door for him may have opened earlier this week with Phil Foden briefly returning to the UK to attend the birth of his third child.

However, reports to have emerged over the weekend might leave Gordon disappointed.

England team news vs Slovakia is bad news for Anthony Gordon

Despite the fact Foden has missed some training this week, it seems Southgate will not be changing too much for the first knockout game of England’s campaign in Germany.

They should surely have enough to get past Slovakia but few would doubt the Three Lions have not at their best thus far.

Southgate, however, appears ready to stick to pretty much the same team he has selected all tournament.

According to the Daily Mail, Kobbie Mainoo for Conor Gallagher is the only expected change, meaning the likes of Gordon and Cole Palmer will likely have to settle for a place on the bench.

The questions about Anthony Gordon at Euro 2024 could continue

After the drab draw with Denmark, people close to the families and close connections of the England squad were reportedly asking why Gordon and Palmer were not getting more game time.

To suggest that simply starting either would instantly fix every problem England have encountered would obviously be too simplistic but Southgate could be making a rod for his own back here.

Another dreary attacking performance – whether England win or not – is only likely to increase the frequency of those questions.
