'He is very smart...': Rohl explains what Sheffield Wednesday signing Svante Ingelsson will add to the side

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl has given his verdict on new signing Svante Ingelsson.

Sheffield Wednesday secured their fourth signing of the summer transfer window on Friday, announcing the capture of Swedish midfielder Svante Ingelsson from Hans Rostock.

Ingelsson, 26, joins the likes of Ben Hamer, Max Lowe, and Yan Valery in signing for Sheffield Wednesday ahead of the 2024/25 season; Danny Rohl’s first full campaign in charge at Hillsborough.

More new signings are expected in the coming weeks with Sheffield Wednesday News revealing on Saturday that Jamal Lowe is undergoing a medical with the club.

Lowe now looks set to become the fifth signing in S6 this summer, in what is shaping up to be a very promising summer for the Owls.

Speaking to the club after the return of the first-team players for pre-season training on Friday, Rohl explained what Ingelsson adds to the squad.

Beginning his career in his native Sweden with boyhood team Kalmar FF, Ingelsson has since represented the likes of Udinese in Serie A, and Rostock in 2.Bundesliga.

A central midfielder, Rohl has given fans an insight into what the Ingelsson will add to the team next season.

Rohl said: “For me now, it’s important that we have some players in the midfielder who can accelerate our game.

“He is a box-to-box player with good deep runs in behind. He can score. Good in transition. I think he can play a six, eight, 10.

“This is good to have, again, a player who is mobile, who can bring a lot of energy. He is very smart, very open-minded.”

Svante Ingelsson replaces long-gone Sheffield Wednesday man

Ingelsson, per Rohl’s words, sounds a lot like a former Sheffield Wednesday player whose qualities were never really replaced; Kieran Lee, who left in 2020.

Lee was another player able to play different roles in the midfield, whereas Sheffield Wednesday for the past couple of seasons have had very limited options in the middle.

The midfield department remains extremity light after Will Vaulks joined Oxford United, and loan names such as Jeff Hendrick and Momo Diaby moved on.

So more bodies are needed in the midfield, and younger names would be a bonus too with Bannan, the only natural central midfielder along with Ingelsson, now 34 years old.

But fans will hope to get a glimpse of Ingelsson in pre-season, and they’ll hope that he can quickly settle into the Championship and form a nice partnership with Bannan, who may well be going into his final season with the Owls.
