Garrett Nussmeier on Joe Sloan: ‘I wouldn’t want to play for anybody else’

LSU lost offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock to Notre Dame this offseason. The Tigers didn’t have to go far to replace him. Head coach Brian Kelly promoted Joe Sloan from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator ahead of the 2024 season.

It’s a move that Tigers quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was thrilled with.

“I love Coach Sloan. I wouldn’t want to play for anybody else,” Nussmeier said at the Manning Passing Academy. “I value our relationship a whole lot and I don’t believe there’s anybody else in the country that would be able to get me more ready to play, just based off our relationship and how much he knows me and how much he knows how to push me and make me better.”

Joe Sloan and Nussmeier have worked closely together for each of the past two years. Even though Sloan is taking on a bigger role now by serving as the play caller for LSU, he will continue to work closely with Nussmeier as his quarterbacks coach, too.

“Just continued to do the same work we’ve been doing. We take it day-by-day and get better each and every day,” Nussmeier said. “He’s probably harder on me than anybody. And I’m OK with that, because it pushes me. And I really appreciate that, also.”

LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier opens up on his personal growth as a player

Garrett Nussmeier is set to be Jayden Daniels‘ successor in 2024 after serving in a backup role his previous three years at LSU.

Many quarterbacks in the same position would have opted to explore their options in the transfer portal instead of waiting on the bench for their time. However, Nussmeier stayed patient, improved his game and is being rewarded for it. He obviously has big shoes to fill replacing a Heisman winner, but Nussmeier feels like he’s ready for his opportunity.

“It never changes,” Nussmeier said of the expectations he sets for himself. “You always want to get better each and every day, you know, and I hope hope that if you interview me in 10 years and I’m in my eighth year in the league, I would say that I’m working on the exact same things. Just continuing to get better and just focusing on whether it’s, ‘What am I watching today?’ Alright, notice something. Alright, how can I improve in that area?

“It’s just continuing to get better, like I said, every single day, just keeping my head down and going to work.”
