‘Used to watch his clips’: Cole Palmer says he learned so much from player who left Man City in 2023

Cole Palmer has had a successful period since leaving Manchester City last summer.

In his debut season at Chelsea, the winger scored 25 goals and delivered 15 assists in 45 games across all competitions, which ultimately led to him being included in the England squad for the 2024 European Championship.

During his time at City, the Englishman played alongside numerous top-level players who have been vital to the club’s trophy haul in recent years.

Now though, the 21-year-old has shared some insight about what he learned from one particular player at the Etihad Stadium before his exit.

Cole Palmer shares what he learned from Riyad Mahrez at Man City

Speaking in a recent interview with The Telegraph, Palmer had this to say when asked about what he learnt from Riyad Mahrez during their time together at City.

He said: “Everything. Basics like, which foot to control the ball with, when to run, when to come inside. Stuff like that. I used to watch his clips on YouTube the night before a game. I thought I’d try and do that.”

Mahrez would be an excellent guide for any attacking player

While both players were part of Pep Guardiola’s squad, they appeared in 26 games together between the 2020/21 and 2022/23 seasons.

Having racked up 236 appearances for City, the Algerian scored 78 goals and provided 56 assists, lifting many domestic and European trophies along the way.

This isn’t the first time one of Mahrez’s former teammates has praised the winger for his quality, as Kasper Schmeichel said back in May that the Algerian is “world-class.”

Now that Palmer has shared how much he learned from the former City star, it’s clear that given how impressive he’s been at Chelsea, Mahrez’s guidance has rubbed off on him.
