Sudbury male wellness event planned as Arc charity encourages men to be open about health

A wellness event aimed specifically at men is coming to Sudbury, as its organisers stressed the need for males to ‘be open and explore their health without feeling emasculated’.

Community interest company Access R Community (Arc) announced it would stage its first men’s wellbeing day at AFC Sudbury next month.

The occasion will bring together local charities, support and social groups along with representatives of the fitness, nutrition, grooming, therapy, sports and recreation sectors.

Running from 2-6pm on July 14, it will be followed by a screening of the 2024 Euros final in the club bar at 7pm.

Although it will be an event open for people of any age and gender to attend, organisers say the day is targeting a male audience, due to the lack of such events elsewhere.

Maxine Jackson, co-founder of Arc, said: “Having been to a lot of wellness events, retreats and exhibitions, it occurred to me that there aren’t many men attending.

“This perhaps is due to societal influences and the way men have been raised for many generations.

“Phrases like ‘man up’ or ‘don’t be a girl’ are all too common and encourage men to keep their problems to themselves.

“It’s no secret that men suffer just as much as women with low mood and depression – however, they aren’t always given permission to be open or explore those feelings.

“The wellbeing sector sees many men taking up professional roles supporting men’s health.

“We want to encourage the trend, which gives permission for men to be open and explore their own health, without feeling emasculated.

“We wanted to bring together a collection of clubs, groups, professions and people who are passionate about health and wellbeing, in a fun and light-hearted environment where advice is offered and helpful conversations could take place around wellbeing.

“There are some fantastic people coming along on the day, offering their time, advice and expertise.

“We hope the day encourages new social connections and a self-care approach to day-to-day habits for anyone seeking a healthier and happier experience of life.”
