Palace at the Castle returns for season of outdoor theatre

This summer all the fun of the theatre will once again be out in the open air.

Palace at the Castle returns this summer, with plays swapping Newark Palace Theatre’s stage for the grounds of Newark Castle.

Kicking off the season is The Bench, taking place in the Castle Gardens on Monday, July 22.

Newark Castle grounds.

The show promises to be a comedic gem, brining to life the vibrant tales hidden in everyday encounters.

Life’s stories unfold with humour and heart in the witty script and settings which turn the mundane into the extraordinary.

The humour continues with Shakespeare’s Midsummer Nights Dream on Saturday, July 27.

Four young lovers, a band of hapless actors, and a magical realm full of mischievous spirits set on causing mayhem at every turn will culminate in an unparalleled open-air experience.

Branded as “Shakespeare as it’s meant to be” the show is interactive, fun and highly accessible with magic, romance and heaps of laugh-out-loud comedy.

Next to grace the grounds are Chapterhouse Theatre Company who will bring to life Louisa May Alcott’s beloved coming of age story with their production of Little Women on Tuesday, July 30.

It tells the tale of the four March sisters — Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy — through the adventures of their youth to the trails of young adulthood.

Each sister is determined to pursue her own path in life, but though their dreams may be different, their family ties remain as true as ever.

An uplifting and heartfelt tale of the March sisters’ journey into adulthood and all the trails and triumphs that come with it, Chapterhouse Theatre Company’s Little Women will feature authentic costuming and a beautiful musical score.

Award-winning actor Jonathan Goodwin will perform a show scripted and adapted by himself on Thursday, August 8.

In the “sparkling and sprightly” one-man show Wilde About Oscar, audiences can join Oscar Wilde as stories are told, laughter raised and, perhaps, a few tears shed.

The final show of the outdoor theatre season will be The Gondoliers, by Illyria Theatre, on Wednesday, August 14.

Set in picturesque Venice, the light-hearted operetta will whisk audiences away to a world of blissful romance, barbed satire and comedic chaos as charming gondoliers, Marco and Giuseppe, suddenly find themselves elevated to the status of royalty.

Hilarity ensues as the pair are tasked with choosing their Queens, only for the rightful Queen arriving and demanding to know which of the men is her husband.

As the plot thickens and the absurdity reaches its peak, love triumphs, and the gondoliers discover that happiness lies not in noble titles but in the simplicity of true love.

The lyrics of Gilbert and melodies of Sullivan are expertly brought to life by Illyria, who have been captivating audiences all over the world for more than thirty years.

The Gondoliers promises an enchanting evening of laughter, music, and will leave you with a song in your heart as Palace at the Castle comes to an end for the year.
